Description

H. B. PELTON. PAPER RLL PROTECTOR.
APPLIOATION FILED APn.1v,-19o9.
Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
u m.. j M
wilnmow @if 4 To all 'Zuhom it may concern: Be it known that I, IIENRYB. PELTON,
UNTED bTA'FESy PATENT orricn y HENRY B. PEL'roN, orMIsHAWaKA, INDIANA.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Mishawaka, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements `in `Paper Roll Protectors, of which the following is a speciication.
This invcntionrelates to paper roll protectors. .i
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which may read-i` ily and positively be secured in the mandrelhole of a roll of any sheet material, andin such manner as positively to preclude accidental disconnection, whereby to adapt thev hole to constitute an efficient container for tacks, cleats and other articles used in the positioning of sheet roofing, 'andfurther to insure the properprotection of the Vends Vof the roll. I
With the above andother objects in View, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a paper roll protector, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. 1
In the accompanying drawings `forming a" part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts-Figure 1 is a perspective vdetail view of one form of protector. Fig.' 2 '1s a vertical longitudinal sectionalview throughv a portion of a roll of sheet material, showing the manner of assembling i the protector therewith. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the protector shown in Fig..2. Y Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a roll of sheet material,
displaying a modified forrnV of protector as-1 sembled therewith. Fig. 5 is a view' in side elevation of a further modified form of protector. Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view of a spreader used in connection with the protector shown in Fig. 5. 1; f y
Referring to the ldrawings and to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 thereof, designates a roll of sheet material of any character, `and M the mandrel hole thereof. The protector consists of two parts,vr a ring` or annulus, and a Y disk constituting adspreader and a rollend closure. The ring is struckup from apiece of sheet metal, preferably'one that is resilspecifeatincf Letters Patent.: y Patented Aug. 31, 1909. Application filed April 1'7, 1909." Serial No. 490,637.
ient, and embodiesan annulus 1 of a diameter approximating that `of the roll, and a plurality of fingers 2 integral with the walls of the central opening and disposed approximatelyat right angles to the annulus. The fingers terminate in arrow-head or triangular shaped heads 3, the wings of which are bent at right angles to the length of the lingers to provide anchoring prongs 4, and the` points 7 which are also bent at right angles to the length of the fingers but in a direction opposite the prongs to provide stops 5 to limit the insertion of the spreader 6; Each finger is provided adjacent to the stop with a teat or spreader locking boss 7.
The spreader is constructed from a disk of metal and is provided with'a iiange 8 disposed at right angles to the plane of the disk and furnished with notches 9 that enter the Vdisk a distance equal to or somewhat greater than the lateral extent of the teats. The
:spreader is also provided with a pair of wrench is then inserted in the openings 10,
and the spreader is turned to bring portions of the flange Sinto locked engagement with the teats, thus securely fastening the former inplace. Y
In the form of invention shown in Fig. 4,
`the annulus 11 has its lingers 12 provided intermediate of their ends with pointed anchoring Vprongs 13, and its terminals bent to provide `stops 14. The spreader 15 is a plain disk.- The mode of positioning this form of protector is the same as that above described.
In the form of invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the annulus 16 is provided with fingers 17 provided intermediate of their ends with pointed anchoring prongs 18 and withl terminal stops 19, the fingers being preferably normally disposed at an obtuse angle to the plane of the annulus to facilitate insertion into the mandrel hole. The spreader l having pronged 20 is provided with an outward flared ange 2l to force the fingers Voutward and thus sink the pri'igs into the materalofthe froil.
Having-thus`descrbed my invention, what I claim is z-f l. A roll end protector"i'nntijg'rising"aV rliirg having pronged iingers arranged Ito enter the roll vand-a spreader ldisk arranged to *engagesaid fingers. Y Y Y f M roll endlprotector 'comprising la ifing having pronged iingers arrangedto enter the roll and a V'spreader disk forming a roll end. C10u.12-, 1 roll yend protector comprising a r'i'ng ingers, a iin'ger 'spreading disk and interengagi'ng means 'on -the -iiii'gers and disk. Y
4. A roll end protector comprising a ring having pronged fingers, inward extending projectionson 'said 1ing4e'rs,and a closing disk arranged vto 'engage said' projections;
' la rollend protecting and closing 'device-a 4`ring"11"*a-v'-1'n` integral fingers pr0- vided with prongs, spaced projections adja- 'Leiitt'he 'terminals of the fingers, and a disk V'having marginal notches arranged to pass theitermost of said projections.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, inpresence of two witnesses.
