F. M. SCHAEFFER', O B LOOMING GROVE, KANSAS.
Leners Patent No. 93,233, ma August 3, 1369.
IMPROVEMENT 1N' xTnNsIoN-HAMES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making par@ of the Bane.
To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, F. M. SGHAEF'FER, of Blooming Grove, in the county of Linn, and State of Kansas,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in ExtensionfHames; and I do hereby declare that the fob lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willY enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specication.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in hames for horses harness; and consists in so constructing them that they may be extended and thereby made to tit diierei'it-sized horses, and also so as to change the place of draught or strain upon the horses breast, as will hereinafter be. more fully-described. l
In the accompanying plate oidra'wings- Figure 1 represents a side view of the haines, somewhat extended, as when in use.
Figure 2 is an edge view, showing the method of extending and fastening the parts together in any desired position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v v
These llames are made in vthree longitudinal sections. A is the lower curved portion, being a metallic socket or sheath for receiving the upper portion B, which portion may be made of either wood or metal, or both combined.
C is a sleeve, which slides over A, with an adjustable lstaple-plate, D, confined beneath its edge, and in contact with the outer edge of A, as seen in fig. l.
E is the staple, which is permanently attached to' y the plate, and projects through a slot, f, inthe sleeve, as seen in fig. 2, so that its position may be changed without extending or contracting the haines.
The parts A B of the haines, and also the stapleplate D are pierced with a series of holes, which register with each other.
Screw-threads are cut in the holes lin theV lstaple-v plate, and a thumb-screw, g, is provided tofit the holes, the end of which screw` passes through the socket A, and into the-part B, thus holding them s ecurely together in any position inwhich they may be placed within the limits of the aforesaid holes.
It will be seen that the'paxts A B may be extended as far as can be desired, and fastened in any one position, and that the staple E and sleeve C, with the ring h, may be moved, if desired, withoutdisturbing the main portion of the haines.
The advantages of this Ymethod of constructing llames are many, and must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention,
` I claim as new, and desire to secure byx Letters Patent- Y 1. The parts A, B, and O, constructed, combined, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
2. The-adjustable staple E and sleeve 0earryling the ring h, or either of them, in combination with an extension-hames,` substantially as described, for' the purpose speciiied. f
F. M. SOHAEFFER.
' VYitnesses JOSEPH RICHARDS,
JAMES F. 0mm.
