F. W.BRANER. LATCH HOOK FOR GATES, nouns, AND THE LIKE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT.11, 1906.

\VITNESSES: I INVENTOR 0%McAJQ/5C00 Trad Wfirarzer ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED W. BRANER, OF TROY, ILLINOIS.
LATCH-HOOK FOR GATES, DOORS, AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED IV. BRANER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Madison, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Latch-Hooks for Gates, Doors, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improved latch hooks for gates, doors and the like, and has for its object to provide an eX- ceedingly simple and eifective device of this description which will be adjustable whereby the hook may be lengthened or shortened to compensate for various conditions.
\Vith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is an elevation of my improved adjustable hook. Fig. 2, a similar view, the threaded barrel being sectioned so as to clearly show the connection between the two sections.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the shank section of the device, having an eye B by which it may be attached by staple or screw to a gate or a door or the post or jamb thereof, and with this section is formed the barrel C, here shown of larger diameter, and this barrel is internally threaded as indicated at D for the reception of the threaded end of the hook section E, which latter terminates in a suitable hook F. Barrel C, is integral with shank A and is of uniform diameter, being provided with an interior bore which is threaded and which is of uniform diameter throughout. The end of this bore is separated from shank A, by a solid section-of material as indicated at H.
In practice, when my improved hook is applied to a door or gate or like object, no special care need be taken in driving the staples or screws for pivoting thehook and Specification of Letters Patent.

providing for the engagement of the nose thereof, since the hook may be lengthened or shortened to properly reach the distance between these two points, and should. the weather or other conditions cause the varying of these two points the hook may be easily adjusted to the varied conditions by screwing the section E in or out of the barrel, as the case may be.
By my improvement the disadvantages heretofore attendant upon the use of such a hook are entirely overcome, for it often happens in using the ordinary latch hook that the screws or staples vary or bend when being driven into place, and the gate or door is often left too loose or too tight when locked by the hook; or after the hook has been properly secured in place the wood work may swell or contract from weather conditions and then become tight or loose, and under the old system this could not be compensated for except by withdrawing the screws and staples and redriving the same, whereas, by the use of my improvement this can be done at any time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
A latch hook comprised in its entirety of two members, one of said members being composed of a shank formed with an integral eye at one end and at its opposite end with a barrel of uniform' diameter throughout, which barrel is of greater diameter than that of said shank, said barrel being formed with a threaded interior bore of uniform diameter throughout its length, which bore terminates at a point distant from the inner end of the barrel, the other of said members being composed of a stem of uniform diam eter throughout its major portion which stem is threaded at one end to engage in said threaded bore of the barrel and which is formed with a hook on its opposite outer end.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRED WV. BRANER.
