SASH-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,744, dated'November 22, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. CLEMEN'rs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ooperas Cove, in the county of Coryell and State of Texas, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to sash-fasteners or supp0rts,and is applicable to sashes which are not counterweighted.

The invention contemplates the use of a vertically-disposed rod which is attached to a window-casement, and in connection with this rod a clutch is employed which is attached to the sash.

The invention resides especially in the construction of the clutch and improvements in the means for attaching the clutch to the sash.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and definitely set forth in the claims.

In the drawings which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of a window and sash to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the sash at the point of attachment of the clutch, showing my device in side elevation and showing a portion of the rod passing through the clutch. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the clutch. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the eye of the clutch. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the clutch-plate, which is used for attaching the clutch to the sash.

Throughout the drawings and specification the same numerals of reference denote like parts.

Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the casement of a window in which the lower sash 2 is adapted to be raised, but not counterweighted. In applying my invention I provide a vertical rod 3, which is attached, preferably as shown, to the side of the easement 1 by means of suitable heads 4., the same having plate-like extensions 5, enabling the use of screws or similar fastening devices for this purpose. In practice the extremities of the rods 3 would fit loosely in the heads, and the rods would be cut to any desired length.

A clutch 6 is provided, having an eye 7, through which the rod 3 passes, as shown. This clutch has a neck 8, which connects the eye with a pintle 9, which pintle projects laterally to form trunnions or pivots 10. The clutch 6 is attached to the sash 2, preferably at substantially the point shown, by means of a plate 11, having openings 12, adapting the same to be attached by means of screws or similar fastening devices. The lower extremity of this plate is provided with integral claws or curved fingers 13, which turn outwardly, as shown, and which are set apart to form a space 14 therebetween to receive the neck 8 in the manner shown. The pintle 9 or its extremities 10 he against the inner sides of the claws 1 3 in such a manner that the clutch is securely held, though free to rotate upon a horizontal axis of the pintle. The extremities of the claws 13 preferably terminate in nibs 15 or points which are adapted to penetrate the face of the lower sash, as shown, in this way increasing the secureness of the plate when attached. The inner face 16 of the eye 7 is preferably beveled, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. In this manner it presents a reduced diameter at substantially its middle plane. This form for the eye is considered highly advantageous, as it much improves the effectiveness of the clutch.

It should be understood that in applying the device the rod would be placed at such a distance from the sash that when the clutch would be held substantially horizontally the axis of its eye 7 would substantially coincide with the axis of the rod. If, however, the outer extremity of the clutch is thrown upjwardly, the weight of the sash will operate so as to cause the eye to bind upon the rod, in this way supporting the sash in any desired position. In order to facilitate the manipulating of the clutch by hand, I provide its outer extremity with a tip 17, as shown. The manner in which the clutch binds itself upon the rod is most clearly shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a vertically-disposed rod, means for ICQ tached to a sash and having integral claws, the body of said plate having openings therethrough for attaching the same, said claws having projecting points adapted to penetrate said sash, and a clutch having a pintle retained by said claws, said clutch, having an eye through which said rod passes.
