Description

E. E. DE KALB. HOLDER FOR WINDOWS.
(No Model.)
Patented Aug. 20, 1889.
W Z 5 55 m z 7 X 1 776 asemsr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOCH E. DE KALB, OF SYRACUSE, NEIV YORK.
HOLDER FOR WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,635, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed September 26, 1888. Serial No. 286,401] (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENOCH E. DE KALB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Vindows, the; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to holders for swinging car or other windows, doors, and analogous structures.
I11 an application for Letters Patent filed by me on the 21st day of December, 1886,'Serial No. 222,220, I hai e described a hingelatch and its application to a window or door. In that application I I also showed and de scribed a jointed arm to hold the window or door open.
My present invention is an improvement of the means for holding the window or door open.
It consists of a longitudinal slotted segmental or halfcircular arm loosely jointed to the sash-stile at one end and working over a guide-pin secured upon a spring-plate, the pin and plate uniting to form a stop to hold the window or door .from being moved in either direction when it is open to full length of the arm.
The nature and manner of constructing my said invention are more fully described in the following detailed description.
The accompanying drawings illustrate what I consider the best means for carrying my invention into practice.
Figure I is a transverse section of a window or door frame with my device applied. Fig. II is a modified form of connection between the holder and window. Fig. III is a side elevation of the segmental arm or holder,
showing notches. Fig. IV is a plan View of same and spring. Fig. V is abroken portion of frame, showing the opening for the holder or arm.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures where they occur.
A is a portion of a car or other Window or door frame. In a suitable chamber provided therein is secured the spring-plate B, which is provided with athumb button or pesto and an angle-piece Z) at its free end. The thumb-button extends through the walls of the chamber and is accessible to the occupants of the car.
C is a plate secured to the'edge of the window or door stile D, and has an opening 0 near its inner edge.
E is a segmental or semicircular arm, which is loosely jointed to the sash by means of a hook or ball a as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, which engages in the opening 0 at one end, and the arm E is provided with a longitudinal slot 6, which rides over post I) on spring plate B. The end opposite the loose joint is squared, as shown at 6 and the slot extends near enough to this end to permit it to drop in between the post and anglepiece b, whereby the arm is firmly held against movement in either direction. When the window or door is closed, the arm will lie snugly in the chamber and be completely concealed.
I may provide notches, as shown at e in the slotted segment E, into which the angle piece I) of the spring B may be allowed to rest to hold the window ajar to any desired amount, or other means may be adapted for holding the Window or door at various angles, more or less open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a swinging window or door or other part, of a slotted seg' mental arm loosely jointed to the sash or analogous part at one end,and a spring-plate and pin over which it rides secured to the frame, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a swinging window or door or other part, of a slotted segmental arm loosely jointed at one end, and a spring-plate having an angle-piece on its free end and a pin over which the slotted arm moves, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a swinging window or door, of a slotted segmental arln having notches in it, as described, and a spring"- plate having an angle-piece at one end and provided with a push pin or button, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ENOCH E. DE KALB. lVitnesses:
EDWARD RUssELL,
A. W. SKELLEY.
