BROOKE-HANGER.

To all 'whom it may conce-rfa:

Be it known that l., JAMES HENRY Asn- MEAD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Silver Bay, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Broom-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to hangers by means of 'which brooms, brushes and the like can be hung upon hooks, nails or similar supports, in inoperative positions.

lt relates more particularly to a broom hanger adapted to be removably secured to a broom and having a bar or member which can be hung upon a screw, nail or the like, and which is offset from the body of the broom, a guard being provided intermediate the broom and the member, to prevent the nail or other support from becoming caught in the broom straws and injuring the same.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical broom hanger by means of which a broom can be hung in an inoperative position from a nail or other support, which serves as an additional means for holding the broom straws securely together on the neck of the broom, and which is so constructed that the nail or other support cannot become caught in the broom straws to loosen or otherwise injure the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, which can be removably attached to the broom so that when the latter is worn out the device can be removed and applied to another broom, which will in no way interfere with the operation of the broom while sweeping, and which can be manufactured easily and at low cost.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be understood that while the same is particularly useful in connection with brooms, it can also be advantageously applied to brushes and other similar articles.

The device can be manufactured in any suitable manner and from any material.

lt consists substantially of a collar adapted to be removably secured at the neck of the broom, and thusl easily hold the broom straws firmly upon the broom stick, and having an offset member provided with an opening by means of which it can be hung upon a nail or other support, a guard plate preferably formed integral with the member and the collar, being ositioned against the broom straws between t e same and the member', to prevent the nail or other support from penetrating between the straws and thus injuring the broom.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 represents a broom having the usual broom-stick 11 to which is secured the broom head 12. The latterI comprises a large number of straws which are bent toward each other to form the neck 13 of the broom, and having wire windings 14 at the neck to hold them together. Further windings or wrappings 15 of wire or the like serve to secure the room straws to the broom-stick. l provide a split collar 16, having at the ends substantially parallel and laterally disposed ears 17 provided with o )enings 18 therethrough in which is arrange la screw 19. The latter has a head .20 engaging one of the ears, and receives a thumb-nut 21 by means of which the ears can be drawn together. The collar 1G is mounted preferably upon the neck of the broom and is iirmly secured in place by tightening the thumb-nut 21. It will be seen that the collar thus serves not only to attach the hanger to the broom but as well to reinforce the windings 14 of the neck.

A laterally offset member or arm 22 is mounted upon the collar at the side remote from the ears 17. A screw 23 or the like serves to attach the arm to the collar and is adapted to pass through the collar to enter the broom head, thus assisting in securing the collar thereon. It has an opening 23a therethrough Which is adapted to receive a nail or hook 24 or other support by means of Which the broom can be hung upon a nail or the like. A guard plate 25 which may have any suitable form, for example, a circular one, as shown in the drawings, is carried by the member 22 and is preferably formed integral therewith. The guard 25, When the hanger is in position upon the broom, rests against the straws and serves to prevent the hook 24 from engaging the straws to injure the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by .Letters Patent:

1. A device of the class described, comprising a collar` adapted to be removably mounted upon the neck of a broom, a member carried by said collar and oiliset therefrom, said member having an opening theretlnough adapted to receive a support to ,hold

the broom suspended, and a guard carried by said member at the side adjacent to said collar.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a split collar having laterally disposed ears at the ends and adapted to be mounted upon the neck of a broom, means for clamping said ends to secure said collar upon the neck, an arm carried by said collar and laterally offset therefrom, said armhaving an opening therethrough adapted to receive a support to hold the broom suspended, and a guard plate carried by said arm and adapted to lie adjacent to the broom straws when the device is secured to a broom.
