UNITED STATES PATENT @rricn.
SARAH ELIZABETH GEORGE BUCHANAN, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
BROOM-HANDLE ATTACHMENT OR POLE ATTACHMENT CONSTSTING 0F PICTURE-HANGER, DUST-RAG HOLDER, AND SUSPENDING DEVICE.
SPEGIFIGAYI'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,155, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed June 14, 1897. Serial No 640,683. N modem To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARAH ELIZABETH GEORGE BUCHANAN, of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Handle Attachments or Pole Attachments Consisting of Picture- Hangers, Dust-Rag Holders, and suspending Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object the produc tion of a simple and inexpensive household article designed to serve the combined purposes of a picture-hanger, dust-rag holder, and suspension device, whereby a broom or other article maybe hung upon a hook or an eye.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations hereinafter. more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied to the handle of a broom. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is an end view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the device, which is preferably constructed of a piece of sheet metal provided with two side plates or arms 2 3, arranged parallel with each other and formed by bending the saidthus forming the arm with a hook. The arm 2 is formed with an outwardly-bent hook 7. A screw or other fastening device 8 passes through the base or lower end 4 of the device and is provided for attaching it to the broomhandle 9 or other article.
The device as constructed is designed to serve the combined purposes of a picturehanger, dust-rag holder, and suspending device for holding the broom upon a hook, nail, or eye.
When the device is employed for lifting and hanging pictures, the suspending cord or wire of the picture-frame is placed between the two side plates or arms 2 3 and rests upon a base 4. When this is done, the picture may be readily and conveniently lifted by the broom-handle and placed in position upon the nail upon which it is to be suspended. In suspending a picture from a molding the cord or wire is placed in the suspending-hook and the latter then fitted in my device and engaged with the molding, the weight of the picture-frame serving to hold the hook firmly in position during the lifting operation.
If it is desired to use the device as a duster, the-duster-rag or the handle of a dust-brush may be inserted through the opening 6, by means of which cobwcbs or dust maybe conveniently removed from the window-frames or ceiling of the room.
In using the invention as a suspending device the opening 6 may be employed to engage a hook or nail, or the hook 7 on the arm 2 may be used to engage a loop or eye.
It will be seen that I have provided a household article designed to serve a variety of purposes and which is simple and inexpensive in construction.
I have merely pointed out, as illustrating its operation, a few of the uses to which my invention maybe put, as it is obvious thatit is capable of a wider range of employment.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined picture-hanger, dust-rag holder and suspension device comprising two side plates or arms, bot-h provided with openings and one having an upwardly-projecting hook and an attaching means projecting from the base of the device, substantially as de scribed.
2. A combined picture-hanger, dust-rag holder and suspension device, consisting of a piece of sheet metal bent at the base or lower end thereof to, form two parallel side specification inithe presence of two subscribplates or arms each provided with an openi-n-g witnesses. in" and one havin an 11 wardl ro'ect-in 1 T ho ok, and a fasteni i lg devi ize, such s a screw SARAH ELMABMH GEORGE BUCHANM' 5 passed through or projecting from the said 'Witnesses:
base, substantially as described. HENRY WEIDNER, In. testimony whereof I have signed this 1 E. G. KENNEDY.
