UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
WILLIAM A. WOODS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SPOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent NO. 672,088, dated April 16, 1901.
Application iiled August Z, 1900. Serial No. 25,685. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WOODS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Combined Spool and Thread Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to' a combined spool and thread holder; and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective means for removably supporting a spool on the person of the user of the same and to have in connection therewith an attachment for holding the thread to prevent the loose end thereof from falling to an inconvenient reaching distance and also for severing the same, the several parts being strong and durable and the entire device cheaply manufactured.
This invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and.
claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spool and thread holder embodying the features of the invention and shown applied. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the improved device looking toward the side thereof opposite from that shown by Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views.
The numeral l designates a safety-pin adapted, as usual, for removable attachment to fabric and in the present instance designed for removably applying the improved device to the person of the user of the same. From the lower portion of the pin the side bars of a substantially rectangular frame 2 depend in a rigid manner, the lower central portion of the said frame having an elongated eye 3 to detachably receive a VVcentral hook 4 at the upper contracted portion of a U-shaped spool-holding frame -5 of a resilient nature and having inturned terminal fingers 6 to removably enter the opposite portions of the spool-bore at the head ends of the latter. To the depending side bars of the frame 2 is securedathread-holding plate 7 inclined downwardly toward the inner bar and having a downwardly extending outwardly -inclined notch 8 in the inner end The said notched end of the plate 7 extends inwardly beyond the inner side bar, so as to give freedom to the operator in throwing the thread 'thereover or removing the said thread therefrom, and this notch also has one wall 9 thereof constructed as a cutter for severing the thread into lengths for use.
It is preferred that the improved device be applied to the bosom of the wearer, and by having the holder movably depending from the frame 2 the parts of the device will be 'made to conform to the contour of the body of the wearer. It will be understood, however, that the device may be equally well used on other portions of the body than that specifically stated, as the mode or place of application does not in the least affect the successful operation of the same. To insert or withdraw a spool from spool-holdin g frame 5, the inturned terminal fingers are sprung outwardly to engage or release the opposite ends of the same, and the spool is free to rotate on 'the said fingers to permit the thread to be unwound therefrom. After a length of thread has been broken off the loose eX- tremity is drawn upwardly over the plate 7 in the notch 8, as shown by Fig. l, and thereby held within convenient reaching distance.
The entire device is strong and durable in its structure and can be cheaply manufactured and sold, and though the improved device has been illustrated and described in its preferred form it is obviously apparent that changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a spool and thread holder, the combination of a substantially rectangular rigid frame having a safety-pin movably attached Yto .the upper portion thereof and disposed in a horizontal plane, a resilient spool-holding frame movably suspended from the lower portion of the said rectangular frame, and a flat plate secured to and. extended entirely across the rectangular frame and one extremity projected beyond the one side bar of the latter frame, the said projected extremity of the plate having a downwardly-extending outwardly-inclined notch formed therein to receive the loose thread end and having one wall thereof constructed as a cutter for severing the thread.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto ahxed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM A. WOODS.
Witnesses:
FRANK KARSTAEDT, G. B. SAMUELS.
