Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed October 21, 1908. Serial No. 458,756.
To all whom it may concer/n.:
Beit known that l, EDGAR ltUs'rIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Files, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention. relates to -files, and especially for use in department stores, for filing sales checks.
lt is the present custom in department stores to 'lile the sales checks all together on sticlz files, it requiring a number of girls each morning to arrange in order the sales checks of each salesman, according1 to their numbers. The considerable expense of having these sales checks sorted will be saved by the use of my invention, for by its use the wrapping girls or cashier can sort the sales checks they are received, so that the sales checls received from each salesman will at all times be .filed by themselves in the order in which they have been received. ln using my file, it is possible for the wrapping girl or cashier to file the sales check by one movement of one hand, and there is no danger of the sales checks being blown away by electric fans, while being filed, or subsequently.
Still other objects ol" the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, but it will be undertood that I do not limit myself thereto as l consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ret'- erence indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, in which-` Figure l is a perspective view ot' the file; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that standards l are provided, these standards being held. in place by a rear member or wall 2, it being possible to make the standards with the members 2 in such form as may be best suited for the particular purpose to which the file is to be put. Secured to the inner sides of the standards l are side members 3, the side members 3 having their portions which are secured to the standards l, disposed horizontally, but which have projecting portions 4 which are disposed obliquely with reference to the standards l, and to their horizontal portions. Integral with the upper terminals of the obliquely disposed portions 4 of the side members 3 are inwardly disposed flanges 5. The ilanges 5 at either side of the 'Ele are disposed. parallel with each. other. Springs 6 are secured to the side members 3 and secured to these springs 6 are bottom and rear members 7 and 8 respectively, the bottom and rear members being integral and being disposed substantially at right-angles to each other. The bottom member 7 projects forwardly beyond the flanges 5 and the spring 6 is adapted to hold the bottom member 7 yieldingly upward so that it will press against the bottom of the flanges. Each of the bottom members 7 is constructed in the same manner, with a rear member 8 and a spring 6 to hold it upwardly, and the bottom members are disposed one over the other so that one will be in engagement with each pair of parallelly disposed anges 5.
In using my invention, the operator may take one ofthe sales checks 9 in her left hand and by placing it in the proper division ofl the file', she may press the sales checlr 9 downwardly, thereby pressing the bottom member 7 downwardly so that the sides oi" the sales check will be disposed beneath the flanges 5 and by releasing her hand the bottom member 7 will be forced upwardly by means of the spring 6 thereby holding the sales check 9 between the bottom member 7 and the flanges 5, so that there is no danger of its being lost or blown away.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a file, standards, side members secured thereto, inwardly disposed flanges secured to the side members, a bottom member, and means to hold the bottom member yieldingly upwardly against the flanges.
2. In a file, standards, side members secured to the standards, inwardly disposed flanges secured to the side members, bottom and rear members which are secured together substantially at right-angles to each other, and means to hold the bottom member yieldingly upwardly against the flanges.
3. ln a file, two standards, means to keep the standards at a predetermined distance from each other, parallel series of side members secured to the standards, inwardly disposed flanges secured to each of the side In testimony whereof I have signed my members, bottom and rear members which neme to this specification in the presence of 10 are secured together respectively substantwo subscribing witnesses.
tially at right-angles to each other and T springs secured tobthe side members, which EDGAR RUSTID" support the bottom and rear members respectively sind hold the former yieldingly upward against the llenges respectively. 1
