NATHANIEL TYLER, JR, AND WILLIAM A. LIEBER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA; SAID LIEBER ASSIGNOR TO SAID TYLER.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND PRESSING TROUSERS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,034, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed May 19,1897. Serial No. 637,261. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, NATHANIEL TYLER, J r., and WILLIAM A. LIEBER, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding and Pressing Trousers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters pf reference marked thereon, which form a part 'of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for holding and pressing trousers or other articles, and especially to means whereby a number of pairs of trousers may be folded over rounds in a suitable framework, which rounds are so disposed with relation to one another that when a pair of trousers is folded over each of the various rounds the outer folds of each pair will be substantially in the same planethat is to say, the lower rounds, between which and the pressing-board there will be the great est thickness of folds of overlapping trousers or other articles which it will be desired to press, will be mounted in the side strips of the framework the farthest back from the front or pressing side of the device, while the upper round will be the nearest to the front side, with the intervening rounds set-slightly back of one another.
A further part of our invention resides in the provision of a suitable pressing-board which will hold the overlapping trousers or other articles in a compressed relation, thus taking out any wrinkles and keeping the proper shape to the same, the compressingboard being preferably held to the framework by means of spring-clamps, which will cause an equal pressure to be applied the entire length of the frame.
In connection with the foregoing it is our purpose to construct our improved garment pressing and shaping device so that it will knock down and be made to occupy a small space, adapting it convenient for transportation by packing it in a suitable travelwall to hold the device thereto,
ing-case, it being our design to attachit to the side of a door, to which it may be held by suitable thumb-screws.
Another part of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby any one pair of trousers folded over a round may be removed by simply removing the particular round desired without disturbing any of the other pairs which may be held within the pressingframe, there being suitable fasteners to hold each round in place when they are. inserted in the holes in the side strips of the frame.
Our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letpressing-board clamped to the framework, a
portion of the board being broken away and a round partially removed. Fig. 2 is a view showing the frame knocked down in readiness to be packed for transportation. is a central vertical sectional view through the pressing-frame and trousers being pressed therein. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the frame on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a modified form of pressing-frame. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 isa sectional detail view through one of the dovetailed corners.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a door or wall to which the pressing-frame is to be attached. The framework is composed of the strip B, which hassuitable thumb-screws B passing through the strip and which are designed to engage in the side of the. door or To said strip B is hinged the lower portion 0 of the frame, which has its ends dovetailed to the upright strips D, which side strips have a similar dovetailed connection with the top piece E, and at each corner of the frame is a retaining Fig. 3
thumb-screw F, which thumb-screws may enertures (1, (shown clearlyin Fig. 4,) while the other strip on the opposite side has a series of depressions extending only partially through the strip, as seen in d in Fig. l and also in Fig. 1. These apertures and holes or depressions are provided to receive the rounds G, adapting them to be removed. Over each aperture cl is provided a pivoted spring retain ing member D, which when turned over the aperture, after the round has been adjusted in place, will hold the same in position.
It will be noted that the series of apertures cl and the holes or depressions d are disposed in inclined rows longitudinally in the side strips, so that when the trousers K are folded and placed on the rounds the outer folds of the various pairs will lie in substantially the same plane, so as to be equally pressed by the clamping-board M, which is held in place in a pressing relation against the overlapping pairs of trousers by means of the springclamps M, which are pivoted to the board, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, on the pins m, these spring-clamps engaging with the clips N. A suitable chain Q is attached at one end to the upper strip E, as at e, and when it is desired to swing the framework back against a door or wall one of the links of 'the chain maybe caught over the hook S, as shown plainly in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
In Fig. 5 we have shown a slight modification in which the rounds are held in inclined grooves instead of the manner hereinbefore described, this construction making it convenient to remove any particular pair of trousers without first removing the round, as is necessary in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
WVe do not confine our invention to the precise construction shown and described, but may make slight alterations without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described ourinvention, what .set forth.
2. A device for pressing trousers, comprisin g a framework having a series of removable rounds mounted therein and in vertical parallel planes, combined with a detachable pressing-board and spring-clamps pivoted thereto, substantially as shown and described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture a device for holding and pressing trousers, comprising a knockdown framework having dovetailed connections and binding-screws to retain same, combined with a detachable strip to which the framework is hinged, thumb-screws for attaching the strip to a door, removable trousers-supporting bars and the presser-board, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a device for pressing trousers, the combination with a knockdown frame having dovetailed connections, the strip hinged to the framework, and designed to be attached to a door, of a series of rounds passed through apertures in the side strip of the framework with their inner ends seated in depressions in the opposite side strip, and pivoted spring retaining members designed to be held over the outer ends of the rounds, and means for holding the frame in a vertical position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
