Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 27, 1905. Serial No. 257,776-
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XAVIER O. HALBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chan enton, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Bag Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to store furniture, and embodies a novel form of rack or holder Idesigned particularly for supporting paper ags.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention a revoluble support comprising the rackbody is utilized, said support being provided with a plurality of bag-clamps so arranged and so constructed as to admit of convenient displacement of a single bag of the size desired by the user whenever necessary.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of arack or holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing more clearly the spring connection between opposite clamps.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Generally describing the invention, the numeral 1 indicates a suitable base which supports the rack or holder, and this base is adapted to be secured to a counter or similar support in some convenient position. Centrally of the base 1 and projecting upwardly therefrom is a shaft 2, upon which the rack or holder 3 is mounted so as to be revolved to bring the various bags of different sizes carried at the sides of the rack nearer the person who is using the device. The rack or holder 3 consists of a bottom 4 and top 5, the parts 4 and 5 being connected by spaced vertical bars 6, suitably attached to the said bottom and top at opposite ends. The bottom and top 4 and 5 of the holder 3 are provided with central apertures, through which the shaft 2 passes to afford a bearing for the rack upon. said shaft. The bottom 4 is spaced from the base 1 of the device, and in order to promote ease of revolution of the rack with clamp and the sides of the rack 3.
respect to its base it is designed to dispose antifriction -rollers 7 or similar means between the bottom 4. and the base 1.
The bars 6 are preferably four in number, though this is not essential in the contemplation of the invention, and connecting said bars at intervals in. their length are a plurality ofhorizontal or cross bars 8. The several cross-bars spanning the space between adjacent bars 6 are connected by means of vertical longitudinal rods 9, said rods being preferably located in spaced relation from each other and from the adjacent side bars 6 of the rack or holder 3. It is preferred that the rods 9 be bent at intervals in the length thereof to form eyes 10, receiving the bars 8, and thereby firmly securing the rods thereto. Extra wires 20 may be used to connect the rods with the bars 8 at points where the eyes 10 are not used as above mentioned. (See Fig. 2.)
The various horizontal bars 8, transversely arranged upon the rack or holder 3, support bag-clamps 11, said clamps being of somewhat U form, consisting of spaced sides, the eX- tremities of which are provided with loops 12, receiving the bars 8 and admitting of pivotal movement of the clamps with reference there to. The sides of the clamps 11 are of course connected by means of a cross-bar, the latter being adapted to directly engage with the bags which are interposed between each The sides of the clamp 11 are curved outwardly in order that a bunch of bags may be folded in the form illustrated in the drawings in placing the same in position upon the rack, the arrangement of the bags with respect to the clamps being designed to facilitate disengagement of a single bag from a bunch which may be held in position by a single clamp 11. The clamps 11 at opposite sides of the rack or holder 3 are connected together by means of springs 13, the tension of which is sufficient to hold the clamps firmly in engagement with a bunch of bags, permitting removal of a single bag, however, with case when the said bags are arranged in the manner prescribed. It is preferred that the springs 13 be of the coil type, and two springs are utilized to connect two opposite clamps upon the rack. The ends of the springs 13 are provided with hooks 14, which pass through loops 15 in the sides of the clamps 11, said loops being preferably formed by bending the clamps, which may be made of wire or similar material. In
order that the pairs of springs which connect each pair of opposite clamps may not interfere with one another in the arrangement preferred, it is designed that opposite pairs of clamps throughout the length of the rack or holder 3 be arranged somewhat lower than the pairs of clamps at the adjacent sides. In other words, pairs of bars 8 at opposite sides of the rack or holder are disposed beneath or in a plane lower than those bars 8 extending at approximately a right angle thereto. The rods 9 form stops which prevent the clamps 11 from being pulled inwardly into the space between the bars 6 of the rack 3 when the last bag of the bunch which may have been held in place by a respective clamp has been pulled. Further, when the bags held in place by a clamp are narrower than the space between adjacent spaced bars 6 it will be seen that the clamp will press the bunch of bags against the rods 9, which latter will form supporting members cooperating with the clamps tohold the bags in place. It will be understood that any suitable number of the clamps may be used as found desirable and dependent upon the quantity of bags and assortments which are commonly used by a dealer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A paper-bag rack or holder comprising a plurality of oppositely-disposed spaced bars, horizontal bars connecting respective spaced bars of the holder, clamps pivoted to said horizontal bars, and springs connecting oppositely-arranged clamps.
2. A paper-bag rack or holder comprising a plurality of oppositely-disposed spaced bars,
horizontal bars connecting respective spaced bars of the holder, clamps pivoted to the horizontal bars of the holder and embodying spaced sides, and springs connecting the sides of oppositely-arranged clamps.
3. A paper-bag rack or holder comprising a plurality of oppositely-disposed spaced bars, horizontal bars connecting respective spaced bars of the holder, clamps pivoted to said horizontal bars, springs connecting oppositely-arranged clamps, and a plurality of vertical rods connecting the several horizontal bars at the sides of the holder and cooperating with the clamps as specified.
4. In a paper-bag rack or holder, the combination of a holder or rack embodying a plurality of spaced vertical bars, horizontal bars connecting the spaced bars at intervals in their length, clamps comprising sides provided at terminals with loops receiving the horizontal bars aforesaid and affording pivotal connection therewith, said sides being formed with loops between the ends thereof, springs connected with the loops, the sides of the clamps being curved outwardly from the sides of the rack or holder, vertical rods connecting the several horizontal bars at each side of the holder and cooperating with the clamps, and springs connected at ends thereof with the loops between the ends of the sides of oppositely-disposed clamps carried by the vertical bars of the holder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
