To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS SPAULDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of- Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedclothes- Supports for Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a bed clothes support for folding beds.

It is the object of this invention to provide a device for supporting the bed clothes of vertically swinging folding beds when .the latter are in their upright position and by means of which the various articles of bed clothing may be held in separated relation to each other so as to effect ventilation thereof.

Anotherobject is to provide a device of the above character which can be readily applied to the ordinary vertically swung folding beds and which is simple in construction and easily operated.

A further object is to provide means by which the bed clothes support will serve to hold thebedclothing at the foot of the bed against displacement when the bed is in its horizontal position.

Another object is to provide a locking means whereby the foot portions of the various articles of bed clothing may be placed in spacedrelation while the bed is in its horizontal position.andmaintained in such spaced relation while the bed is beingmoved from its horizontal to, its vertical position so that when the bed is folded into a recess where the bed clothing would be inaccessible the clothing will automatically swing to its dependent spaced position.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying. drawings in which:

More specifically, 5 indicates thev frame of a vertically swinging folding bed having a foot rail 6 mounted thereon and fitted with the usual mattress 7. The foot rail (3 is provided with side rails 8 which connect with the bed frame 5 and may be fitted with intermediate bars as is common in folding bed construction. In carrying out the present invention, a plurality of supporting rods 9 are rigidly mounted on the foot rail in any desired manner and arranged to extend parallel with the side rails 8 the foot of the mattress 7. The rod 9 is formed with a straight central portion 10 which is adapted to extend horizontally when the bed is in its vertical position and has a downwardly eX- tending hook portion 11 at its inner or lower end preferably disposed adjacent the bed frame 5 and spaced from the outer face of the mattress 7. This hook portion 11 is here shown as comprising a shoulder 12 formed in continuation of the rod 1.0 extending at right angles thereto which connects with a member 18 extending parallel with the portion 10 and connecting at its outer end with a member 14 which is bent to' form a flange 15 adapted to be attached to the rail 8 or to the bed frame The outer end of the supporting rod is also formed with a hook member 16 here shown as comprising a shoulder 17 formed in'continuation of the member 10 connecting with a member 18 which is bent inwardly at its outer end to form a connecting member 19 having a flange 20 adapted to be attached to the side rail 8 or the foot rail 6. The supporting rod is thus formed with U-shaped depressed portions at each of its ends.

Slidably mounted on each of the supporting rods is a series of rings or loops 21. The rings on each supporting rod are connected together by means of a chain 22 or other flexible member, one end of which is attached to the shoulder 12 or other portion of the supporting rod and the outer end of which connects with a horizontally extending locking bar 28 fitted with loops 24, slid ably engaging the supporting rods and arrangedto extend transversely across the foot portion of the bed parallel with the foot rail 6, as particularly shown in Fig. .3. The chain 22 is of such length that when the locking bar 23 is positioned in the hook -1 and 3.

In the operation of the invention the clamps are secured to the bed clothing in such manner that the innermost article will be suspended on the inner rings 21 carried on each of the supporting rods 9, and the outer article carried adjacent the locking bar 23 with the intermediate articles supported on the intermediate rings 21. When the bed is in a horizontal position the rings 21 and the loops 24 will be engaged by the shoulders 12 .of the hook members 11, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the foot portions of the bed clothing will thereby be securely held against displacement. When it is desired to close the folding bed and to arrange the various articles of bed clothing in spaced relation to each other, the loops 24 of the locking bar 23 and the rings 21 are moved out of engagement with the shoulder 12 and the locking bar is moved upwardly on the members 10 of the supporting rods and the loops 2% thereon engaged with the shoulder 17 of the hook member 16. This may be accomplished while the bed is in its horizontal position whereupon the parts will be disposed as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 or where the bed is folded into a closet and is accessible from its interior the locking bar may be moved to its outermost position when the bed is in its vertical position. On disposing the loops 2 1 in engagement with the hook member 16 the locking bar 23 will be held against displacement and the chains 22 will be drawn nearly taut so as to dispose the foot portions of the articles of bed clothing in separated relation to each other, and when the bed is swung to its vertical position the various articles of bed clothing will depend from the clamps and be separated from each other so as to permit a free circulation of air therebetween.

Any number of the supporting bars may be mounted on the foot portion of the bed as desired and any number of rings and bed clothes clamps may be provided as occasion requires. It is manifest that any suitable means may be employed for mounting the supporting ,rods on the bed frame or its foot member other than that here shown, the essential feature being to provide supporting rods with shoulders or depressions by means of which the bed clothes may be held against displacement either in their separated position when the bed is in its upright position,

and held in close 7. contact with each other when the bed is in its horizontal position.

By providing a single locking bar extend ing transversely of the bed and engaging each of the .supporting rods the adjustment of the position of the foot end portions of the articles of bed clothing is facilitated, as in moving the locking bar from one end of the supporting rods to the other theentire collection of articles of bed clothing-will be moved therewith. However, in some instances this bar may be' dispensed with in which event the outer loops 24c-will constitute the locking members which will co6p-. erate with the hooks 11 and 16 in holding. the articles of bed clothing in their innermost or outermost positions.

A bed clothes supporting device for vertically swung folding beds comprising a plurality of supporting rods, aseries of rings slidably mounted in each of said rods, a flexible connection between the rings on each of the rods, a series of bed clothes engaging clamps on said connections, a lock- 105 ing bar slidably mounted on the supporting rods and connected to the outer end of-said flexible connections, and means on said supporting rods for retaining the locking bar in dposition at either end of the supporting 119 ro s. 3. A bed clothes supporting device for vertically swung folding beds comprising a plurality of supporting rods carried by the bed frame, U-shaped hook members formed 115 at each end of each supporting rod, ajs eries of bed clothes clamps slidably mounted on said supporting rods, a 'locln'ng bar, loops on said locking bar slidable on the supporting rods adapted to be engaged by the U- shaped end portions of the supporting rods, and a flexible connection extending between the clothes clamping members on each of the supporting rods connecting at their outer ends with the locking bar and connecting at their inner ends with the supporting roc s.

4. In a bed clothes supporting device for folding beds, a support membercarried by the bed, a series of bed clothes engaging members slidably mounted on said support member, flexible connections between said bed clothes engaging members and hook means formed in each end of said support member adapted to hold the bed clothes engaging members in spaced relation to each other.

5. In a bed clothes supporting device, a supporting rod having spaced dependent hook portions and flexibly connected clothes supporting members slidable on said rod and adapted to be engaged collectively by one of the hook portions and to be spaced on the rod and held in spaced relation by the other hook portion.

6. In a bed clothes supporting device, a supporting rod, a series of flexibly connected clothes supporting members slidably mounted on said rod, a hook on said rod adapted to receive said clothes supporting members, and a second hook on the rod adapted to receive the outermost of the clothes supporting members.
