To all whom it may concern:

, Be it known that I, Tnoares GONNELLA,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music- Racks, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to racks for sheet music or the like and. has for an object to provide a rack for conveniently supporting books or sheets of music and which, furthermore, can be conveniently folded when not in use.

Among other features the invention comprehends a rack formed of few and simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled, parts of the rack being adjustable so that the rack will conveniently support the desired articles.

Still further the invention comprehends a rack which can be quickly folded so as to take up very little room when not in use and although the rack is particularly adapted as a support for sheet music it will be understood that it can be used generally as a support for various articles and also be adapted to the sick room and the use of invalids to support books of various kinds in convenient positions for reading.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which,

Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the rack, showing the same in position for use, and

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation showing the rack folded.

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide an upright 10, formed at its upper end with a head 11 through which passes a bolt 12 carrying a thumb nut 18, said bolt also passing loosely through ears 1% formed with a plate 15, the ears and plate providing a coupling to a centrally located piece 16, the plate 15 having swivel connections with the piece 16 by a bolt 17. The piece 16 forms a part of a rectangular frame 18, constituting the rack proper, and the frame consists of a ledge 19, horizontally disposed and L shaped in cross section, with side Patented Nov. 26, 1917.

The side pieces 20 and a portion 22 of the ledge 19 together with the upper cross piece 2]. are formed with a series of openings as shown, andthe centrally arranged piece 16 is connected to the lower cross portion of the ledge 19 and the upper cross piece 21 by having belts or rivets 2 1 passing through the centrally arranged piece 16 anda plurality of the openings 23 in the cross portion 22 and upper cross piece 21. rrlsothe side pieces 20 have their lower and upper ends connected to the cross portion 22 and upper cross piece 21 respectively, the belts or rivets 2% in these instances being applied the same as in the application of the centrally arranged piece to the frame 18. Likewise extensions 25 adapted to normally lie in horizontal planes and a similar extension 26 adapted to normally stand upright are applied to the side pieces 20 and upper cross piece 21, respectively, by the bolts 24, the same as in the other instances cited, suitable nuts 27 being applied to the bolts 24: to prevent accidental removal of the bolts. Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the upper end of the centrally located piece 16 and the lower end of the extension 26 have a common bolt connecting them to the upper cross piece 21, and it will be clearly seen that, if desired, the extensions 25 can be raised or lowered upon the side pieces 20 by removing the bolts and nuts thereof and passing them through other openings in the side pieces. In this manner the extension 26 can also be moved horizontally along the upper cross piece 21 and it will be clear that with an adjustment of this kind the angularity of the extensions with respect to the frame and their positions on the frame can be changed to suit books or sheets of music of different sizes. It will be further noted that, if desired, the frame can be made smaller by moving the side pieces inwardly upon the lower cross portion 22 and upper cross piece 21 and that the upper cross piece 21 can also in a similar manner be moved downwardly upon the side pieces 20.

lVith the described construction set forth, it will be noted that the frame can be easily and quickly arranged to accommodate sheets or books of music of various sizes or dimensions and referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that by pivotally connecting the side pieces and central piece With the ledge and upper cross pieces and the extensions with the side pieces and upper cross piece, the entire frame can be readily folded to the position shown in Fig. 3. ,Thus the specific arrangement of the parts forming the frame and the particular apertured construction of'the frame permit first, of folding the entire rack or changing the relative positions of various of the parts thereon to accommodate books or sheets of music and the lit: of different sizes. 7
