BINDER FOR MUSIC, PERIODICALS, 6:0.
No. 338,350. Patented Mar. 23, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. KOCH, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
BINDER FOR MUSIC, PERIODICALS, 30C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,350, dated March 23, 1886.
Application filed August 22, 1885. Serial No. 175,059. (No model.) Patented in Germany Mayfifil, 1885, No. 33,566.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. KOCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Berlin, Germany, have invented an Improvement in Binders for Music, Periodicals, &c., of which the following is a specification.
Music-binders have been made of two covers and an arched back, such back containing two or more springs that form clips by which the music is held at the back edges of the cover between the ends of the springs in the back. A music-binder of this character has been made and sold for many years.
My present invention is adapted especially to use with binders of this character, and isintended to obviate a difliculty which I have heretofore experiencednamely, that the music, as packed together and introduced be tween the edges of the spring-back,is very liable to pass down too far into the hollow back, and it is very difficult to hold the sheets of music with the back edges all in line with each other while introducing said sheets of music into the spring-back, and with periodicals the printing is liable to be partially included in the part that is grasped by the spring-back.
Perforatingpins have been used with the spring-back for holding the sheets; but they injure the paper and are not adapted to holding a small number of sheets.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section oi'the music'binder having a spring-back, and with the sheets of music contained in the supplemental binder; a'nd Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supplemental binder.
The covers A B are united with a flexible back, 0, and at D are steel springs in a nearly cylindrical form, and the ends abut against each other, so that when the binder is empty the inner edges of the covers are pressed toward each other very firmly, and under ordinary circumstances the sheets of music have heretofore been introduced between the edges of this spring-back, as before set forth; but the difficulties before mentioned have been experienced.
Myimproved supplemental binderis made with covers F Gand the strips H I, united to the back edges of the covers by flexible material, such as muslin, the same being creased or pressed together so that the two fabrics unite between the covers and the strips, and there are straps E passing across the back and uniting the parts of the supplemental binder together. These straps may be either elastic or non-elastic and capable of being lengthened or shortened.
The sheets of music or other matter, such as periodicals, letters, &c., are to be packed together and placed between the covers of the supplemental binder, and the back edges of the sheets of music rest against the straps E. The spring-back of the binder is now opened, in the usual manner, by folding the covers baekwardly and pressing them together. Then the supplemental binder containing the music is introduced into the spring-back, the strips H I being within this spring-back. The back now is allowed to spring and grasp the sup plemental binder in the crease between the covers F G and the strips H I, so that the music is firmly held at the proper place, and can be easily opened out when in use, and the cross-straps E prevent the back edges of the music or other sheets from sliding too far into the spring-back.
I claim as my invention The combination, with the binder having a spring-back, of the supplemental binder having the covers F G and strips H I united together, and the straps E passing across the back of the supplemental binder, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 3d day of August, A. D. 1885.
J OH1\ C. KOCH.
