PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAMI-I. Fora, or PORTLAND, MAIN-E.
IMPROVEMENT IN, BILL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,543, dated Sept mber 1, 1874; application filed June 15, 1 874.
. Be it known that I, \VILLIAM HI Form, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and nsefullmprovements in Bill-Files; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full,
clear, aud exact description thereof,'-which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains'to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompan yin g drawings and to the letters of refer nce marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 shows an end view in section of my invention. Letters Patent of the United States having already been granted me for an improvement vin bill and'paperfiles, the object of this presentinvention is to produce an alphabetical arrangement of leaves to accompany the device secured under said Letters Patent, for the better andnlore'conveniertt method of filing My invention embraces a novel arrangement of-the index-leaves and a device for holding them in the required position.
a shows'a back' piece; '1), the leaves forming the index, and c a wire passing up through said leaves parallel with'the back piece a, and having its ends bent and passed throughsaid back piece,as shown in the drawing; The leaves composing the index are thusheld securely in position. These indexleaves are thusc'on StI'K'lCtGdZ-I first take a sheet of paper 'and bend it so as to form a series of successive folds, each sheet, when thus folded, forming two of the index=1eaves, as illustrated in the drawing. d shows the folds. A suitable numtwo witnesses.
ber of these leaves are thus prepared, the
wire 0 passed through them and secured to the back piece a, as above-described.
The object of having the successive folds atthe inner end of the sheets forming the index-leaves is that the said leaves maybe allowed to rise evenly and accommodate themselvesto the number of papers placed between them, and always have a flat and smooth surface.
I- do not claim a set of unfolded disconnected indexed sheets, for thatlias already been made the subject of Letters/Patent;
neither do I claim the folded sheet of itself.
It is evident that an elastic band or other suitable device may be appropriated or used in the place of the wire .0. The'back piece a maybe com-'eniently secured within the frame of the'paper-file.- hen the index-leaves are filled with papers the back piece is taken out of the holder, removed from the wires, the said wires bent around the back of 'theleaves, and
the said leaves containing the papers are ready to be placed away for future reference. \Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a bill and the back piece a, provided with the wires 6,
upon which are held .the folded index-sheets.
I), each set or pair of said sheets havingthc series of successive folds d, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I clai n the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature in presence of WM. HENRYTOYE.
Witnesses FRANK H. JORDAN, CHARLES E. CLIFFORD.
