Be it known that 1, Acumen Dorcas, a citizen of the United States, residing at a falhalla, in the county of Pembina, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lllatch-Boxes; s d I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention. relates to match boxes, of the class wherein the matches are dispensed one or more at a time required, and has for one of its objects to simplify and im prove the construction and increase the utility and efficiency of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide simply constructed device which permanently attached to the box in which the matches are sold and adapted to be readily arranged to enable one or more matches to be witlulrawn, as required, to transfori'n the closure in which the matches are sold into a match safe or disuensary.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists first in a distributing element attached to the cover or cl. sure of the box and receiving element attached to the box which may be so disposed as to coact to enable one or more matches only to be reioved as required.

The invention further consists in a com bined strike and distributor element attached to the cover or closure of the box and a receiving element attached to the body or receptacle portion. of the box.

The invention further consis tacle or body telescopically en ring with a closure or cover, and with a suspending means attached to the closure, and a distributer element also attached to the closure and receiving element attached to the body or receptacle, and coacting to dispense one or more matches.

The invention further consists in a receptacle or body telescopically engaging with a closure or cover, and with a suspending means attached to the closure, and a distributor element also attached s in a recep to the closure and a receiving element attached to the body or receptacle, the distributer element adapted to be extended over the receptacle to maintain it in position within the closure for transportation, and insertible into the Specification of Letters Patent.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as heretofore shown. and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims and in the drawings illustrating the preferred. embodiment of the invention. Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved device in closed position, or ready for shipment or transportation. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the structure arranged as in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the improved device arranged for use, or in position to enable the matches to be removed therefrom. Fig. 5 is an end view from the bottom of the structure arranged-as in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 4.

The improved device is designed more particularly for use upon the ordinary telescopically arranged pasteboard match boxes in which matches are sold at retail, but may be employed upon boxes constructed of any suitable material, but for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to an ordinary match box in which the outer shell or closure is represented at 10 and the receptacle at 11.

Attached to the shell or closure 10 is a suspending eye or loop 12, foldable flat upon the receptacle 11, when not in use and by means of which the device may be suspended from a wall or other suitable structure Evhen matches are to be dispensed there- :rom.

Connected to the front face of the closure 10 at the opposite end to the loop 12 is a metal frame 13, having an abrasive surface 14, of emery or sand to form the strike surface and with a central finger recess 15, and with two wings or guards 1617, extending from the frame 13, at each side of the opening 15, the wings being left in longi tudinal alinement with the plane of the frame when first attached to the closure. Attached to the inner face of the adjacent end of the receptacle 11, is a metal plate 18, and with a central thumb aperture 19 and guards or stops 2021 at each side of the aperture 19 and extending in alinement wit? the edges of the open side of the receptac e.

After the matches are deposited in the receptacle, a sheet of paper is disposed over the matches and the ends bent at right angles and forced between the mass of matches and the ends of the receptacle, as shown at' 22 in Fig. 2. The receptacle is then inserted into the closure and the wings 1617, bent down over the adjacent end thereof and the loop 12, bent down over the other end, the protecting paper strip 22 covering the apertures 15 and 19. The box is then ready for shipment or to be placed on the shelves for sale.

To arrange the device for use, the wings l6-17 are straightened to release the re ceptacle which is drawn out and the paper protecting strip 22 removed, and any matches which may have been displaced arranged in order so that they all he at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the receptacle. The matches are then crowded toward the end opposite to the stops 20*21 so as to leave a cavity in the mass of matches next the'recessed end of the receptacle, so that when the receptacle is partly inserted into the receptacle, the wings l6-17 may be bent down into the cavity and against the matches, as shown in Fig. 6. tacle 11 is forced into the closure 10 until the free ends of wings l617, are spaced the requisite distance from the plate 18, to permit one or more of the matches only to pass between them. If one match at a time is to be removed the distance between the wings and plates will be relatively close, but if two or more matches at a time are to be removed the receptacle will be drawn out slightly, and it is obvious that the number of matches which are to be removed at each operation may thus be easily controlled. The loop 12, is then straightened out and the device suspended from a hook or nail in a convenient ocality, the friction between the casing and closure being suflicient to maintain them in position. What is claimed is 2- 1. In a device of the class described, a receptacle for the matches open at one side and having a recess in one end communicating with the open side, inwardly directed stop the recesses, a closure slidable over the receptacle and provided with a recess in one end opposite the recess of the receptacle, a bendable retarding device extending from the slidable closure, said retarders adapted to be bent over the outer surface of the receptacle when said receptacle is in closed position or inclined inwardly and spaced from the stop wings when the receptacle is in projected position.

2. In a device of the class described, a receptacle for the matches open at one side and. having a recess in one end communicating with the open side, inwardly directed stop wings at the sides of the recess, a closure slidable over the receptacle and provided with a recess in one end opposite the recess of the receptacle, a plate bearing upon said closure and provided with a recess registering with the recess of the same, said plate having bendable projections at the sides of the recess thereof adapted to be bent over the outer surface of the receptacle when said receptacle is in closed position orinclined inwardly and spaced from the stop wings when the receptacle is in projected position. 7
