Be it known that I, Amman SEAUULH, a citizen of the United States, residing at (M32 Evans avenue, in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to broom-binders and the object of my invention is to provide an improved binder for brooms which will hold the straws close together at the lower or working end, to the end that the broom shall wcar more evenly and shall sweep more effectually.

A further object of my invention is to provide a broom-binder which will readily adjust itself to brooms of various sizes.

Other objects of my invention are to provide a broom-binder as mentioned which shall be of simple construction, of low cost to manufacture and one which may be readily applied or attached to a broom.

WVith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a two part band adapted to. encircle the straws of the broom. near their lower end and a pair of spring arms adapted topress the parts of said band together to clamp the broom straws.

My invention further consists in a two part telescoping band as mentioned in combinationwith a spring arm secured to each part of said band and to the handle of the broom and adapted to telescope the parts of the band one within the other.

My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part ofthis -specifica tion, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broombinder embodying my invention in its preferred form, showing the same applied to a broom, the broom belng illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a detail bottom plan view of the two part band, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on substantially the line 00-50 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4.- is a detail sectional view on the line y of Fig. l.

The device consists generally in a light horizontally disposed band 1 adapted to encircle the straws or head of the broom near the end and a. pair of spring arms 2 the function of which will appear hereinafter. The band 1 is formed of two similar parts 5) and a. The parts 1-} and L are substantially U shaped and their free ends are slidably connected. The upper edges of the members 3 and 4 are turned over :t'orming the strengthening ribs 5 and (3 respectively. The ends of the member 'i are arranged between the ends of the member 2-3 and the ends of the portion (3 are turned down over the upper edge of the member forming the flanges 7, and the lower edges of the member l are provided with the up turned flanges 8 upon each end thereof. The ends of the member 3 are held between the flanges 7 and S and are freely slidable therebctween. The lower corners of the member 3 are turned outwardly forming the lugs 9 which constitute stops to prevent separation of the parts, the stops 9 engaging the flanges 8.

The arms 2 are preferably formed of a single piece of spring wire and the tension of the arms normally tends to slide the members 3 and 4; together. The wire of which the arms are formed is bent into a ring 10 adapted to encircle the handle of the broom above the straws, it is then bent downwardly as at 11 upon each side and then bent into the small rings or eyes 12 after which it is curved outwardly and downwardly to conform to the shape of the head of the broom, the latter portions constituting the spring arms 2. The lower ends of the arms are attached to the members 3 and 4: respectively at substantially their central points, and to this end the arms are provided with the hooks 13 which engage eyes or apertures lat formed in their respective members. To increase the tension of the arms a hook 15 is connected to one of the eyes 12 and is engaged with the other after the device is placed on the broom. To place the device on a broom the hook 15 is unfastened and the device is slipped on over the handle and pressed down over the head into the position shown in Fig. 1. The spring arms 2 will readily adjust the device to the broom and will clamp the straws together by pressing the members 3 and 4. toward each other. After the device is in position on the broom, the hook 15 is fastened to increase the tension of the arms 2.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of a class described, a two part band adapted to encircle the straws or" a broom, said parts being formed of sheet metal and the edges of one part near the ends thereof being bent over He edges of the other part forming a sliding connection in combination with spring arms attached to the respective portions of said band, substantially as described.

2. In a ClGYlCG ot' a class described a two part band adapted to encircle the straws of a broom. said parts being formed of sheet metal and the edges of one part near the ends thereof being bent over the edges of the other part forming a sliding connection and the lower corner of the first said part being bent outwardly to form a stop for limiting the outward movement of the parts and spring arms attached to the respective parts substantially as described.

In a device of a class described, a band adapted to encircle the straws of a broom and formed of two parts slidably connected, in combination with a tension member comprising a single piece of wire bent into a ring to encircle the handle of the broom then bent downwardly a short distance and bent into small eyes and then curved outwardly and downwardly to conform to the shape of the head of the broom forming spring arms, said arms being attached to re spective parts of the band and a curved hook secured to one of said eyes and adapted to engage the other eye substantially as described.
