To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM NEUGASS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washable Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to washable hats ada ted for use by women and children.

The objects of the invention are to improve the construction and ornamental appearance of such hats, as well as to adapt them to be readily taken apart and washed.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the comination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the recise embodiment of invention herein disc osed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a per spective view of the hat cover which is adapted to be removed and washed whenever nec essary or desirable. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the hat band provided around the upper edge thereof with fastening tabs; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the hat brim showing the head opening provided with a lining and a series of fastening tabs adapted to be en gaged with the fastening tabs of the hat band, the parts shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 being illustrated in separated relation. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section through the hat, with the cover, band, and brim assembled.

Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.

The reference numeral 1 indicates the hat brim, which may be made of any suitable material and preferably consists of two layers a and b, folded upon each other, the outer edge of the lower layer 1) being folded over the outer edge of the upper layer a, as shown at c, and stitched or otherwise secured thereto.

A plurality of .circular cords 2 are secured to the brim 1 in any suitable manner, either bv stitching or otherwise, the circular cords 2 preferably being arranged within the layers of the brim. The brim 1 is formed with a central head opening 3, to the edges of which an inner lining 5 is stitched or other wise suitably secured, as indicated at 6. The upper end of the lining 5 preferably is open and is adapted to be drawn together or c osed by means of a draw string 7. Secured to the brim 1 around the head opening 3 therein is a plurality of fastening tabs 8, preferably four in number, each of which is rovided with an outwardly-extending ma e fastening member 9, adapted to fit into an inwardly-extending female fastening mem: ber secured to the hat band as will hereafter appear.

The reference numeral 15 indicates the hat band which is in the usual annular form and is adapted to be detachably connected with the brim 1. Secured to the outside of the hat band 15 near the upper edge thereof is a plurality of fastening tabs 16, each of which is provided with a female fastening member 17, adapted to receive the outwardly-extending male fastening member on the tab 8 of the brim 1. The hat band 15 is provided around the upper edge thereof with a circular cord 18, and around the lower edge thereof with a circular cord 19, as shown particularly in Fig. 4. When it is desired to connect the brim 1 and band 1.5, said band is placed upon the brim around the head opening 3 and the tabs 8 on the brim 1 are caused to lie in between the tabs 16 and the brim 1.5, so that the outwardly-extending fastening devices 9 of the tabs 8 will project into the fastening devices 17 of the tabs 16.

The hat cover 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and. 4-, is provided with a crown portion 20 to fit over the hat band 15 and a brim portion 20 to fit over the brim 1. The hat cover 20 is provided With a contracting string 21 which is circular in form and is of slightly larger diameter than the hat band 1.5, so that when the cover 20 is drawn down over the band 15 the contractin string 21 will hold the hat cover frictionally in connection With the hat band 15, thereby dispensing with the necessity for independent fastening means to hold the cover in position.

It is obvious that the cover 20 and the brim can be removed and washed whenever desired.

The hat of the present invention is strong, simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction.

What is claimed is: V I

1. A washable hat comprising a flat brim. having a central opening and a plurality of circular cords, the innermost circular cord being of larger diameter than the opening in said brim, a series of fastening tabs secured around the opening in said brim, a removable band having a series of fastening tabs secured to the outer side thereof adjacent its upper edge, said fastening tabs being adapted to be engaged with the fastening tabs of the brim, and a cover adapted to be frictionally engaged with said band.

A washable hat comprising a brim having a central head opening and a plurality of I circular cords, all of said circular cords being located a considerable distance away from said central opening, a lining secured to said brim around the edges of said central opening, a draw-string for said lining, a series of my hand in the fastening tabs secured to said brim around the central opening therein, each of said fastening tabs having an outwardly-extending male fastening member, a band' of approXimately the diameter of the opening in the brim, a plurality of fastening tabs secured to the upper edge of said band, each of said lastj' men tioned fastening tabs having a female fastening member adapted to receive the male fastening member of the tabs on the brim, and a removable cover adapted to be frictionally held in engagement with said band.
