ELIZABETH Zigg -2L0 UNITED sTAfrEs rgrnntr orrron ELIZABETH ZIEGFELD, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION "CAP END SUNBONNET.
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH ZIEGFELD, citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Caps and .Sunbonnets, of which the.
following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in head gear and has for a primary object to provide a combination cap and sun bonnet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a head gear which may be readily con verted into a cap or sun bonnet, as desired.
A further object is to provide a combination cap and sun. bonnet which may be readily converted into either of these forms of head. gear by reversing the position of the double flaps secured to the lower edge of the crown.
A further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and increase the efliciency of the same while at the same time the cost of the device will be reduced.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevational view of my device in use as a sun bonnet. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the device in position upon a head in use as a cap, the flaps being folded back. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail transverse vertical sectional View through my combination cap and sun bonnet. Fig. 4, is a fragmentary perspective view, partly in section, showing the manner in which the double flap member is secured to the edge of the crown. Fig. 5, is a View similar to Fig. 4:, showing the manner in which the braid is secured in the upper edge of the double flap member.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters Specification of Letters'Patent.

proper shape and an opening provided in its smaller lower portion of the proper size for engagement with the head, it being understood that the hair is received and accon'nnodated in the upper larger portion of the crown.
Secured by its inner edge to the gathered edge 2 of the crown is the continuous double flap member which is formed of two pieces of material having their right sides turned outwardly, said pieces forming the flaps being secured together at their opposite edges, as will be clearly understood by referring to the drawings.
It will be understood that the inner edges of the two flap members are positioned upon opposite sides of the gathered edge 2 and the parts secured together by a row or rows of stitching 4-. Positioned between the outer edges of the continuous flap members is a strip of braid 5 which is secured in position by the row or rows of stitching 6 which serves to secure together the outer edges of the flap members.
The continuous flap 3 is formed by providing two strips of material each having a straight edge and a curved edge with the largestportion of the strip at the center of the same while the ends of said strip are the narrow portions. Each strip has its ends connected and overlapped and secured together by stitching or any other suitable and well known means. The flap members are then reversed and placed one inwardly of the other with their right faces or surfaces outwardly and the flap member then secured to the crown in the manner previously stated with the narrow portion of the double flap member indicating the front of the cap when the same is used as a dust cap or morning cap and indicating the back of the device when the flap is to be turned downwardly to form the sun bonnet.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a head gear of extremely simple construction and which may be readily converted int-o either a dust cap or sun bonnet and which when not in use, may be readily and neatly folded in compact form. It will also be seen that as the flap 3 is constructed of two separate strips with their right sides outwardly, the right side or surface of the material only will show when the flap is in either position. It will also be seen that the device may be constructed of various materials, either washable or non washable and will be extremely cheap to manufacture.
lVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A three-piece combination cap and sun bonnet comprising a single crown member and a pair of opposed continuous flap members with their finished sides positioned outwardly whereby said flap may be turned 15 back against the crown to form a cap, said flap when in normal position serving as the extended portion or" a sun bonnet, the inner edges of the flap members being secured to the opposite faces of the crown and around 26 the circular edge thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIZABETH ZIEGFELD.
