Description

armies rara HARRY BURROUGHS BEATTY, OF SAVANNAH, GEORG-IA.
DETACHABLE COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uot. i6, dgl?.
Application filed December G, 1916. Serial No. 135,447.
To all whom t may concern.'
Beit known that l, HARRY B. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Detachable Covers, of which the following is a speciii'v inexpensive to manufacture, and highly convenient in use.
Other objects and advantagesof the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, `Figure lis a perspective View of a cover embodying the invention, applied to a drinking glass,
w Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a drinking glass, such as an ordinary soda-water glass, which flares toward its upper end.
The numeral 6 designates my improved cover, asa whole, which may be .formed of paper or other suitably flexible material.A
' This cover 6 has its material bent into the form of an annular flange 7, and the material of this flange is plaited, with the plaits tapering toward their ends, as shown. This tapering of the plaits provides the flange with an annular contracted portion 8, the
flange increasing in diameter upwardly and downwardly from this contracted portion 8, as shown at 9 and 10. v
The portion 10 forms a flaring lower end for the cap, which is of the same diameter as the upper end of the portion 9, and is adapted to receive the end of the drinking glass. The cap is then forced downwardly upon the drinking glass, the contracted portion 8 being suiHciently expansible for this purpose. It is obvious that when the cap is placed upon the drinking glass the contracted portion 8, being smaller than the end of the tumbler, will securely hold the device in place. Thecapis provided with an opening 11 stamped therefrom, for the passage of a straw or the like.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, l-
claim A paper cover for a drinking glass provided withan upwardly flaring mouth, coniprising an imperforate body portion having an opening formed therein for the passage of a straw, and a substantially annular flange formed integral with the body portion, said flange being provided with longitudinally extending plaits, said plaits decreasing in width toward their upper and lower ends, said flange being circumferentially eX- pansible and contractible and circumferentially reduced between its upper and lower ends, the lower open end of the flange having a diameter as great as the body portion of the cover.
In testimonfy whereof I alix my signature in presence o two witnesses.
HARRY BURROUGHS BEATTY.
