PUT'I'Y CLIP.
Application filed December 19, 1919. Serial No. 346,000.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WILSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at -Akron, in the county of Summit and State 6 of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Putty Clip, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates'to a putty clip to be especially used upon what is commonly known as the spiral putty or'legging which is provided at its top end with an elongated tape or strip.
The principal objectof the invention is to provide a clip which may be attached so as to hold the tape of the putty or legging securely around the wearers leg so as to prevent same from slipping or becoming accidentally removed as has been the experience of leggings of this nature.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide a clip of a very simple construction which will be small in size so as not to be readily noticed when worn and will not have a tendency to tear the tape when attached thereon.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, arrangements, and combinations of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 shows the device in use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention showing part of the clamp broken away so as to more clearly understand the construction of the body portion; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showingthe interior construction of the clamp.
By referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that in Figure 1 there is shown the spiral putty 1 wrapped around the leg of the wearer and having at its top the tape 2 upon which is fixed the clamp indicated by the letter 0. Coming now more particularly to the invention which is shown to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawing it will be seen that it consists of a body portion 3 which is ofa substantially rectangular shape and has provided the elongated slot 4 spaced a distance from its free end. Within the slot 4 and running along the longitudinal edge is provided a plurality of teeth 14: for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Along the longitudinal' edges of the body a there is avided the flanges 5 which extend therefrom at right angles. Along the top l0ngitudi nal edge of the body 3 there is provided there is provided a cut-away portion 11 fora purpose soon to be disclosed.
A clamp 8 of a substantially rectangular shape is provided and has an ear at one end bent upon itself so as to form a sleeve 9 fitting between the sleeves 7 and around the pin 15. At the other opposite edge of the clamp 8 there is provided aspring cap 10 which is adapted to engage the cut-away portion 11 of the flange 5.
Upon the inner surface of the clamp 8 there is provided a block 12 which is held thereto by means of the rivet 13. This block 12- may be of any suitable frictional material, such as rubber, canvas, and it also .may be of metal provided with a friction surface, as is made clear in Fig. 3 of the drawing. I wish to reserve the broadest latitude as far as materials are'concerned for this block 12.
By referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing the operation of the device will be clearly seen.
The tape 2 is first passed through the slot 4 and then passed around the leg so as to allow the end to be placed between the body portion 3 and the clamp 8. The clamp 8 is then thrust inwardly toward the body 3 so that the spring caps will engage the portion 11. It will, of course, be understood that the putty clip described is especially adapted to be used for thejright leg and that the clip rused for the left legis substantially of the same construction with the exception that the ears 6 are placed upon the bottom longitudinal edgeof the body and the cut-away portion 11 is placed upon the upper longitudinal portion.
The above description and drawing refer to what I call thepreferred form of my invention and I wish it understoodthat I may make such changes in construction, arrange ment, and combination as, fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
. A device of theclass described-comprising a body having a, slot adjacent one end, right thereof, the width of the clamp being less I angularly extending flanges alongits longithan the length of the body, so that the tudinal edges, one of said flanges extending clamp does not extend over the slot.
throughout the length of the body and the WILLIAM E. WILSON. 5 other terminating a distance from one end Witnesses:
thereof, a clamp hinged on the edge having H. R. A ELE,
' the shorter flange adjacent the termination W. S. NICODEMUS.
