Description

MYER STERN AND R. M. SELDIS, .OF NEW YORK,- N. Y.
LettersPatent No. 91,382, dated June 15, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, MYER 'STERN and R. M. SnLDIs,-of thecity, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Muff; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which `will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication, in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3, represent end views of our improved muii, showing it, respectively, half open, closed, and quite open.
Figure 4 is a plan or face view of the frame;
Figure 5 is a transverse section of the frame.
-Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object 4of this invention is to construct a muf which can be entirely opened, so that it can be laid flat, in order to save much room in packing, and to allow it to be conveniently placed between other articles, when p'ut away during the warm seasons.
The muiis as heretofore made, could, in the trade, only be packed into cylindrical "boxes, and thereby occupiedmuch more room than necessary, causing, also, a considerable outlay for boxes.'
' Our improved mnifs can, when laid fiat, be conveniently packed in considerable numbers into a large rect angular box, and can in this form be more safely andv economically transported andshipped.
In travelling they will be found very convenient, as they will, when spread out, form very soft and comfortable pillows. V
Our muff, when flattened, can'be put between linen goods or garments, to be completely enveloped on all sides by the same, and will thereby be perfectly protected from the moths and other injuries.
Our invention consists 'chiefly in so constructing a muti' that it can readily be laid dat, when to be packed or put away, and as readily be brought into the cylin- -drical form for use, its ends being, in the latter case,
connected by a suitable clasp, or fastening-device.-
r.lhe invention also consists in a supporting-frame, provided with a locking-device, whereby a divided muil' is adapted to be spread out dat, or locked together.
A, in the drawing, represents the body of our improved muii.
This is made of au outer layerof fur, of suitable kind, stuli'ed in a suitable manner, and is made in the ferm oi' a sheet, so that it can be laid dat, as in fig. 3,
or have its ends joined, as in iig. 2, to form a cylinder.
Within this fur-lin'ed sheet, A, we prefer to arrange a bracing, or stiffening-frame, B, made of longitudinal and transverse bars of whalebone, sheet-metal, or other suitable material.
This frame will serve to brace the 'mu' when in the positions shown in ligs. l and 2.
lhey may, however, be dispensed with, if the stuifing is sufficient to retain the muli` in the proper form, and We do not conne ourselves to its use.
The cross-bars c a, formed on the end of the frame, or if there be no frame, on the ends of the mnff, should be made of rigid material, and are provided with a suitable clasp, b, or other fastening-device, by means of which they may be connected, to lock the muli' in the cylindrical position shown in g. 2.
Cords c d, may be drawn through tubular seams formed on the edges of the muti', to connect its inner parts.
These cords need not be tied to close the muil', but may have rings e e, -iitted over them, so that they may, by these rings, be drawn and held together, as in fig. 2.
Elastic or other cords, ff, whose ends are fastened to short bars g, may be provided, so that the said bars may be tted through slots of the cross-bars a.
These cords will prevent the entire opening of the muli' when it is desired to reach pockets that may be provided in its stuffing, and will hold it partly open, as in'iig. 1.
They may, however, with one end, be readily detached from the cross-bar, when the mud' is to be entirely opened.
Di'erent means of fastening the cords f, may be provided.
Having thus described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A muti` which is adapted to be spread out, and closed in cylindrical form, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. A supporting-frame, B, provided with a lockingdevice, whereby a'divided muli` is adapted to be spread flat and secured together in cylindrical form, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
