Specification of Letters Patent.
atented May 8, 1917.
Application :filed July 14, 1916. Serial No. 109,377.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, BELLA P. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Baby Hammocks and Swings; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in combined baby hammocks and swings, and has for its object to provide a device of this character constructed in such a manner that the same can when in a horizontal position be used as a hammock, and when in a vertical position the device can be used as a swing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that a child can be placed therein when the device is used as a hammock and the flaps laced together so that the child can be left unattended in perfect safety.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is formed from suitable fabric, and further to provide means whereby the device will be held against collapsing when in use7 but can be readily rolled into compact form when not in use.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the same when used as a hammock.
F ig. 2 is a similar view showing the device when used as a swing.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4l is a transverse sectional view.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the hammock body, which consists of a bottom 2, sides 3, and ends 4, said sides having stitched to their free longitudinal edges elongated flaps 5, which are provided with eyelets 6 and in which are engaged the laces 7, which serve to hold the liaps 5 in a position to prevent the child from accidentally falling from the hammock. The ends of the bottom 2 are provided with ,pockets 8 in which are engaged wooden strips 9 which serve to hold the body in proper stretched position. The upper edges of the ends l are also provided with pockets 10 for receiving the wooden strips 11 which serve in conjunction with the strips 9 to hold the hammock in proper shape.
The ends of the bottom 2 are provided. with tabs 12, said tabs having metal. eyelets 13 secured thereto, the purpose of which will appear later. Stitched to the upper edge of the sides 3 are flaps 14, said flaps having eyelets 15 formed therein which are engaged by the ropes 16, said ropes being also engaged in the eyelets 17 formed in the ends i and sides 3 and have their outer ends connected to a snap hook 18 which is adapted to engage a suitable support to hold the hammock in a horizontal position.
When it is desired to use the device as a swing one of the snap hooks is engaged in the adjacent eyelets 13 so as to loop the rope whereby the hammock can be suspended in a vertical position, and at which time one of the ends 4 serves as a seat. To prevent the child from falling from the swing a rope 19 is connected to the bottom 2 and is passed around the waist of the child.
It will be noted that the ropes 16 are tied into the eyelets 17 so that the hammock can not move longitudinally on the ropes.
lll/*hat is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a body, tabs associated with the body, ropes connected with the body, said ropes having snap hooks carried by their ends adapted to engage a support to hold the hammock in a horizontal position, or to engage the tabs to support the hammock in a vertical position.
2. A hammock of the class described comprising a bottom, sides and ends, flaps carried by the upper edges of the sides, means for lacing the adjacent edges of the flaps together, second flaps carried by the upper edges of the sides and having eyelets formed therein, ropes extending longitudinally of the hammock and engaged in said eyelets,
said ropes being stretched to the corners of the hammock, the ends of said ropes being provided with snap hooks, and tabs carried by the ends o the bottom and adapted to be 5 engaged by the snap hooks to suspend the hammock in a Vertical position, as and for the purpose set forth.'y
