75 v BY F 70: HI If [I a Z HI Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. WAGGONER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI LINOLEUM JACKET Application filed July 30, 1926. Serial No. 126,015.
This invention relates to a wrapping jacket especially adapted for use in connection with the packing for shipments of linoleum and has for its primary object the provision of a protective covering which may be used in lieu of the ordinary well known heavy crate or boxing.
Another object of my invention is the contemplation of a shipping jacket which may be used over and over and which is returnable at a minimum cost to the factory making the shipment.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sheet member to be wrapped about a roll of linoleum or the like and which carries a pair of oppositely disposed discs each having a tongue extending therefrom to preclude the free edge of said discs from moving away from each other after the discs have been laced in place against the ends of the roll of linoleum to be shipped.
Many minor objects and refinements of construction will appear during the course of the detailed specification referring to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side view of a roll of linoleum which is being packed through the use of a linoleum jacket constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the roll completely cased;
Fig. 3 is a stretch out view of the linoleum jacket showing the outer side thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a similar stretch out view showing the inner side of the sheet member and its protective lining.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views and the numeral 5 designates a roll of linoleum which is being encased for shipment through the use of a jacket made in accordance with the preferred form of my invention.
This jacket should be made to include a sheet member 6 which is turned back upon itself along its opposite ends and sewn as at 7 to provide a tube 8 through which may be passed a draw cord 9. Along the sides of the sheet member 6 may be formed a series of openings 10 to accommodate the cord 12 which is threaded therethrough after sheet member 6 has encircled the roll of linoleum 5, as shown in Fig. 2. A pair of discs 13 are hingedly afiixed as at 1 1 to member 6 adjacent its longitudinal center and spaced inwardly from the ends. These discs 13 should be aflixed close to the turned in edge of member 6 to permit a slight drawing in of the ends by cords 9, as shown in Fig. 2. A tongue 15 extends from each disc 13 to present a means for holding the discs against displacement during shipment. The free ends of these tongues 15 may be laced together as at 16. After the linoleum 5 is placed in the jacket and tongues 15 laced together as shown in Fig. 1, the perforated sides of member 6 are drawn around to place the openings 10 in a registered condition. Cord 12 is then laced through these openings and secured to gether with cords 9 to complete the operation.
In some instances, it is desired to line the o inner side of member 6v as shown at 17 to protect the finished surface of the linoleum.
What I claim is 1. An article holding jacket of the kind described comprising a body sheet, an article retaining member secured to said sheet adjacent two opposite edges thereof and means associated with said retaining member for holding the same against the article, said means being housed between the article and the body of the sheet when in the operative position.
2. An article holding jacket of the kind described comprising a body sheet, an article retaining member secured to said sheet at a 35 point inwardly of an edge thereof whereby when said member is in operative position against an article and said jacket is closed, said edge projects beyond the major plane of the retaining member and completely surec rounds the same, and means including a draw string to partially close said projecting edge over said article retaining member.
3. A jacket of the kind described comprising a body sheet having a tube formed in each of two opposite ends thereof respectively, a pair of oppositely disposed discs hingedly secured to said sheet adjacent the inner edge of said tubes respectively, a tongue carried by each disc and means for connecting ioo the free ends of said tongues whereby to hold said discs against the article to be held, and draw cord in each of said tubes to close said body sheet over each of said discs respeotively.
4. A jacket of the kind described comprising abody sheet, a pair of oppositely disposed discs secured to said sheet at points spaced inwardly from two opposite sides respectively thereof, means for oining said discs at their free edge to preclude movement from each other, means for securing the other two sides together in overlapped relation after the body sheet is drawn around the edge of said discs, and means for securing a portion of said body sheet over the outer face of each of said discs respectively.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WM. H. WAGGONER.
