Description

PATENTED NOV. 14, 1905,

SUPPORT FOR PILLOWS APPLICATION FILED JUNE 27, 19051 ilm uqm bm.
ITE STATES PATENT OFFIU.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed June 27, 1905. Serial No. 267,241.
To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osnrn C. Oonno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Madison and State of In diana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Pillows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention resides in the provision of a peculiar support applied to pillows and designed to facilitate the operation of placing a pillow case or slip thereon.
It is well known that the common manner of holding the pillow with the teeth and using the hands in placing the pillow-case upon the pillow is not only inconvenient, but is sometimes disagreeable, and this invention aims to obviate the above, the support used being in the form of a strip so applied to the pillow as to be readily engaged with the arms when the hands are used to slip the pillow-case upon the article.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing a pillow having the invention applied thereto, illustrating the use of the device in the operation of placing a pillow-slip upon a pillow. Fig. 2 is a view showing the supporting-strip folded, as when out of use. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional View showing more clearly the manner of securing or supporting the strip in refolding the same when out of use. Fig. 4 is a detail view embodying a modification of the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a pillow and the numeral 2 the supporting-strip which is applied thereto and which is utilized to facilitate the operation before described. The strip 2 consists of a suitable length of tape or like fabric material, preferably, the ends of which are stitched or otherwise secured to the pillow at one end thereof, the length of the strip 2 being sufficient to readily permit of passing the arms between the pillow and said strip, so that the strip will be arranged above the elbows. When the arms of the person who is placing the pillow slip or case upon the pillow have been passed through the space between the strip 2 and the adjacent end of the pillow and the strip has been arranged above the elbows, as before in dicated, the natural position of the forearms and hands is such as to hold the pillow from movement, said pillow being suspended or hanging downwardly, so as to easily adjust itself by its own weight. The hands are free to manipulate the pillow-slip when pulling the same upon the pillow when the pillow is supported by the strip 2 abovethe elbows of the person who places the slip in position, and the operation is not only facilitated, but is one which obviates disadvantages which are very apparent in the ordinary method of applying a pillow case or slip to a pillow.
The strip 2 is provided in its length with several fasteners 3, such as are used on gloves or the like, preferably, though any other suitable form of fastener may be used, and these fasteners admit of taking up slack in the length of the strip 2 when the same is not being used, so that the body of said strip will be arranged close to the end of the pillow and will not be likely to protrude from the pillow case or slip after the latter has received the pillow in the customary way. The fasteners 3 will give a double fold to the intermediate portion of the strip 2 when said strip is not in use, and the parts of said fasteners 3 readily disengage to lengthen the strip preparatory to use thereof in the manner which has been before described.
It will be obvious that the supporting-strip 2 may be tucked under the pillow instead of folding the same, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, if desired.
In Fig. i a modified form of the invention is shown in which the supporting-strip 2 is provided at its ends with loops which are adapted to be engaged with split or open-loop members 5, the latter carried by tabs 6, stitched or otherwise secured permanently to the pillow. This construction admits of removal of the strip 2" to facilitate washing of the pillow-covering, if this should be necessary.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is- 1. In combination, a pillow, and a flexible supporting-strip applied thereto for supporting the pillow in the operation of placing a pillow-slip thereon, said supporting-strip being of a length greater than the width of the pillow secured at its ends to the end portion of the pillow.
2. In combination, a pillow, a flexible supsupporting-strip permitting refolding of the body portion thereof to take up slack therein. to
