NITED STATES JESSIE M. HIGLEY, OF NILES, CALIFORNIA.
VALANCE-SUPPORT.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,609, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed December 21, 1900. Serial No. 40,656. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J EssIE M. HIGLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Niles, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valance-Supports; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improved devices for supporting valances around bedsteads and providing convenient means of applying and removing the same.
My improvements consist of extensible and removable cords or rods on which the valances are rove, adapted to be fastened to the posts of a bedstead at its corners, preferably by means of detachable and adjustable collars provided with eyes or sockets to which the supports are attached by hooks, as illustrated in the drawings herewith, forming a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby valances can be instantly attached to and removed from bedsteads for the purpose of sweeping beneath the same or for any other purpose.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure I is an elevation in perspective'of a metallic bedstead provided with my improvements. Fig. II is a top view of a clampingcollar to which the valance-supports are attached. Fig. III is a similar view of an open or spring collar, also provided with fastenings or eyes to receive the valance-supports. Fig. IV is a broken side elevation of an elaslic supporting-cord provided with hooks to engage the-ends. Fig. Vis a similar view of an extensible rod or tube such as can be employed instead of an elastic cord for short lengths. Fig. VI is a section showing the manner of inserting screw-eyelets in the collar shown in Fig. II.
The attachment of valances, especially to metallic bedsteads, in a manner to permit their being instantly applied or removed is a matter of much convenience, especially in sweeping and cleaning, and to this end I provide devices as now to be described, referring to the drawings.
The bedstead A in Fig. I is of the common construction, furnished with valances B,made of any suitable fabric and rove on a throughsnpport 0, made, preferably, of elastic cord when of much length.
For attachment to the bed posts D,I employ, preferably, elastic and adjustable embracing collars E, that when adapted for bedposts of various sizes are made to overlap, as in Fig. II, and are held by a screw F, or when made to fit a particular size of bedposts can be sprung around the posts D, as shown in Fig. III. In these collars are inserted eyes or lugs G to receive the hooks H on the elastic cords O, or a single elongated eye J can be employed to receive two hooks, as in Fig. III, two being preferable in the case of open or spring collars, because tending to close and clamp them around the bedpost D.
When the length is not great, as at the head and foot of bedsteads, especially when these are of less than full width and when the elastic cords do not stretch enough to be applied and removed conveniently, and also in some cases for ornament, I employ extensible pol-- ished rods, as shown in Fig. V, the ends L sliding outward and inward in the tubular center part Min the usual manner of curtainrods. In the case of extensible metallic rods, as shown in Fig. V, these being inflexible, the hooks N are made angular, as shown, the weight of the rods serving to prevent accidental disengagement.
When the overlapping collars (shown in Fig. II) are employed, these can be expanded and contracted to fit around bedposts D of ing inserted for that purpose at spaced distances, as shown in-Fig. VI.
It will be obvious that the particular construction of these devices, especially the collars E, admits of modification as to material,
detachable collars E, for attachment to the uprights of a bedstead, said collars provided With-eyes for receiving the said hooks, sub- 15 stantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JESSIE M. HIGLEY.
