CLOTHES-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ailigxlfii3.
Application filed October 12, 1911. Serial No. $54,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -FRANCIS W. INDEN, a citizen of the United States, residin at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and tate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes hangers and its object is to provide a support or hanger which may be readily attached to articles of furniture for the support of clothes or the like and is particularly adapted to be attached to bedsteads either by the manufacturer or by the housekeeper for the purpose of hanging up clothes at night in a convenient manner.
In the drawing with which I have illustrated my invention and which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 shows my device attached to a bed-post in extended position; Fig. 2 shows the same device retracted and serving as an ornament on the bedstead, a portion of the figure being in section; Fig. 3 shows an alternative form of my device adapted to be attached temporarily to a bed-post or other upright bar, and Fig. 4
'shows the same form of device retracted when not in use. In the above drawing I have illustrated a bed-post or other upright hollow bar A in which is mounted a collapsible peg or hanger B. The peg B is formed wlth a sheath or bushing 2 lying within the hollow post A and fastened therein by means of a set screw 3. The other end of the sheath 2 is formed with a bead 5 on the surface of the post A for the purpose of producing a smooth and ornamental end which is constricted slightly. A. hollow base part 6 of the peg slides in the sheath 2 and its outward movement is limited by a flange 7 formed within the sheath 2 and confined by the constriction of the bead 5. The base part 6 has a constricted neck 8 at the end opposite the flange 7 fitted to receive the body part 9 of the outer section 10 of the eg. The end of the section 10 lying with- 1n the base part 6 is provided with a flange 11 adapted to fit the base part 6 and limit the movement of the section 10 outward. At the opposite end of the section 10 is a knob 12 slightly larger than the body part 9 of the section. The whole peg B is directed slightly upward to aid in retaining articles hung on the peg.
The peg B is positioned as shown in Fig.
1 when in use, this position being secured by seizi xig the knob 12 and pulling outward on it. hen the peg is not in use the knob 12 may be pressed inward thus forcing the section 10 into the base part 6 and driving the base part 6 into the sheath 2, thereby placing the peg in the position shown in Fig. 2 where the knob 12 rests against the head 5 and the entire device has the appearance of an ornament.
In my alternative construction the peg C is formed with a clamp 13 embracing. the bed-post or upright D and attachable thereto by means of a screw 14. A lug 15 is formed on the side of the clamp opposite to the screw 14 and to this lug is pivoted the base part met the peg C. The lower side 17 of the base part is formed longer than'the upper side to give the peg an upward inclination as illustrated in Fig. 3 and to permit the base part to be folded up against the post D as shown in Fig. 4:. The base part 16 is hollow and has a constricted neck 18 which fits the body part 19 of the outer section 20 of the peg C. The end of the section 20 lying within the base part 16 is formed with a flange 21 sliding within the base 16 and preventing section 20 from sliding out of the base part 16. The outer end of the section 20 is provided with a knob 22 similar to the knob 12 by means of which the section 20 may be seized and forced into or pulled out of the base part 16.
Then the peg is not in use the outer section is forced into the base part and the base 7 art is turned 11 against the bed-post as illustrated in Fig. 4. The compactness, simplicity and convenience of my device is evident.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation .of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent thebest embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A hanger comprising, a hollow tubular base part fixed transversely in a hollow vertical tube, a tubular section slidable in said base part having a shoulder on its inner end to prevent removal from said base part when extended and a constricted outer portion adapted to slidably receive an outer ,tubnlar section, said outer tubular section being formed with a hollow ball on its outer end and a shoulder on its inner end to prevent removal from said tubular section, substantially as described.
2. A hanger comprising, a'hollow tubular base part fixed transversely in a hollow vertical tube, said base part havin a rolled edge extending out of said vertica tube and forming a shoulder which engages against said vertical tube to prevent said base part from passin entirely within said vertical tube, a-tubu ar section slidable in said base part having a shoulder on its inner end to prevent removal from said base part when extended and a constricted outer portion adapted to slidably receive an outer tubular section, said outer tubular section bein formed with a hollow ball on its outer end and a shoulder on its inner end to prevent removal from said tubular section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS W. INDEN.
