EMIL'HERRMANN', OF EASTORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
HIGH CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 1,1918.
Application filed July 8, 1918. Serial No. 243,888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL HERRMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in High Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 111- vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a chair structure and more particularly to the class of childrens high chairs.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a chair of this character, wherein the same can be hung or suspended from the back of an ordinary chair for use by a child so that the latter will be comfortably seated and will be prevented from falling therefrom, the chair being of novel form and carries a tray or deck for use in the feeding of the child, when occupying the chair.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a chair of this character, wherein the same can be readily folded or knocked down when not in use, is simple in construction, strong, durable and also one which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of part as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto ap pended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a portion of an ordinary chair showing the high chair constructed in accordance with the invention, mounted thereon.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation showing by full lines the tray in lowered position and by dotted lines the same in raised position.
Fig. 3, is a fragmentary vertical sectional view. 7
Fig. 4, is a detailedaplan view of one of the clamps for the tray. I
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally, the back of a high chair having the side hangers 10 each preferably made round in cross section and from iron, having the lower straight portion and the upper slightly angularly bent portion 11 terminating in a hook 12, the same being preferably covered through the medium of rubber tubing 18, so as to avoid the marring or damaging the article of furniture on which the chair is hung. The chair is adapted particularly for hanging upon the back of an ordinary chair by the engagement of the hooks 12 thereover and the back A of the childs chair resting against the back of the ordinary chair.
Adjustably connected to the hanger mem bore 10 of the back A at the angularly bent portions 11, are the side arms 14, formed with the upwardly curved rear ends 15 terminating in eyes 16, each receiving a pivot 17 detachably engageable in either of the holes 18 in the side hanger l0 and supported by these side arms is an adjustable tray or deck, hereinafter fully described.
Carried by the back A is the seat B of' the childs chair which comprises a suitable seat bottom section 19 mounted upon bracket arms 20, each being formed at its inner end with an L-shaped pivot car 21, through which is passed a pivot 22 engaged in the side hanger 10 of the back A near its lower end, while at the front end of the bracket arm 20 is formed a head 23 in which is fitted a vertical slidably adjustable upright or support 24 for the side arm 14, the upper end of the support 24 being provided with a double jaw spring clip 25 for detachably embracing the side arm 14, the head 23 being provided with a set screw 26 for engaging the standard or support 24 to fasten the same in the seat B, which has its bottom section 19 provided with suitable holes for the passage of the uprights or supports 24 therethrough when engaged in the heads 23 of the bracket arms 20, therefor.
The tray or deck comprises a shelf 27 fitted with a marginal rim 28 and secured to the lower face of the shelf. At each end thereof'is a clamp formed with a base plate 29 having a sleeve 80 receiving the side arm 14, the sleeve being fitted with a set screw 31 for the fastening of the clamp upon the side arm and in this manner the deck or tray is adjustably supported in horizontal position upon the side arms 14 of the childs chair, as will be apparent.
From the foregoing it is thought that the manner and use of the invention Will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. A chair of the character described, comprising a back having side hangers terminating in hooks at their upper ends, side arms adjustably connected to the hanger members, bracket arms extending forwardly from the side hangers, supports vertically adjustable in the bracket arms, upper spring clips on thesupports for detachable engagement with the side arms, and a tray having clamps adjustably engaged with the side arms.
2. A chairof the character described, comprising a back having side hangersterminating in hooks at their upper ends, side arms adjustably connected to the hanger members, bracket arms extending forwardly from the" side hangers, supports vertically adjustable in the bracket arms, upper spring clips on the supports for detachable engagement With the side arms, a tray having clamps adjustably engaged With the side arms, and means carried by the bracket arms and the clamps for locking the same.
In testimony, whereof, I aliix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
EMIL HERRMANN.
