Description

ice. SAFES., niet Peoitcnon @n Ano RELATED oliviers.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
GEORGE H. IRELAND, SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 91,342, dated June 15, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. IRELAND, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Filling for the Walls of Safes, Sto.; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of a wall provided with my improved filling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new lling for the walls of safes and other burglar-proof structures; and consists of a novel combination of tubes, plates, and spring-bars, all arranged so as to make the same almost absolutelyT burglarproof.
The tubes are set close together, so that they will turn when an attempt to perforate them should be made, and rods or bars in them are made so that their fractured ends will close toget-her when they should have been successfully drilled.
A A in the drawing are a series of tubes, made of iron or other suitable material, and arranged in one or more layers within each wall, as shown. If more than one layer is used, I prefer to arrange those of the several layers at right angles to each other, as shown. The tubes of each layer are quite close together,
but still not so close that they could not be turned separately.
Triangular plates B B are placed together between and in front and rear of the several layers of tubes, and t against them to form even surfaces and to prevent the insertion of wedge-shaped instruments between the tubes.
Within each tube is arranged a rod, O, which has narrow ends, that are fitted to receive springs a a. These springs serve to throw the fractured ends of a rod, O, together, in case a burglar should have succeeded in boring through such rod, and will prevent the reinsertion ofthe tool.
The springs may, if desired, be tted around independent narrow bars b, that stand upon the ends of O; or only one spring may be arranged where the two parts constituting one rod are united, in case it should be preferred to make the rods of several pieces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The filling for walls consisting of the tubes A A, that are arranged in layers and combined with the plates B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The rods C, having the springs a, when arranged within the tubes of a wall-filling, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE H. IRELAND.
