Drying Car.
Patented Nov. 16,1869.
rests when thrown up;
ltitrd tant @anni @Wina Letters Patent No. 96,882, dated November 16, -l8`69.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRYING--CARS- m The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it lmay concern:
Be it known that I, J. K. CALDWELL, of Allegheny City, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drying-Cars; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement on the drying-oar,- 'or which Letters Patent were granted to me, March 10, 1868, and consists in a different construction of the vertical supports for the dryingtables, and in the manner of connecting the tables to the supports.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its -construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of' this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an end view, and
Figure 2, a side view.
A represents the upright support which I attach to acar-frame or truck ot' any suitable construction, but usually made low, for economy of room in thef dryingoven.
I use two of these supports placed on one side of the car, one at eac-h end.
The inner face of'each of these supports is notched at intervals, to receive the tables B B, the intervals being of such length that sufficient space will be left between each two tables, B B, to receive the article to be dried.
The shape of' each of these notches is shown in iig. 1, a being the incline on which the edge of the table b, a semicircnlar recess, in
which ther rounded partof the half hinge O is placed. On the inner side of the semicircular recess I) is a projection, c, which supports the hinge C and table B, when down.
The half hinge C is secured to the table B, and may A have a tenon on one end to pass through the support A, or may be laid loose in the recess b.
Then the table may be easily raised, and its lower edge resting on the incline a., it will be perfectly removed out ci' the way of loading and unloading the next lower table.
The angle which the incline a makes with a horizontal surfacef may be varied, according as the tables are raised more orless nearly vertical, the object being to give an even surface, onwhich to rest the edge of cach table B. l
On the other side ofthe car, opposite the supports A, I place other supports, D, having suitable ledges on which to rest the other edge of the tables when down.
The half' hinge C, instead of being separate, and secured to the table, may be made pa'rt of the table.
The tables B B, which may be made in any oi the known and usual ways for such purposes, may be supported, when raised, in any convenient manner, by braces, hooks, or other suitable well-known devices.
Having thus fully described my invention,
XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a drying-car, for drying brick, fruit, grain, or other articles, the supports A A, having inclines a a, semicircular recesses b b, and projections c c, constructed and used substantially as sh'own and described.
2. The combination of the tables B B, half hinges C C, supports AA, inclines a a, sernicircular recesses b, and projections c c, in a drying-oar for drying brick, fruit, grain, or other articles, when constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set myhand, this 16th day of December, 1868.
J. K. CALDWELL.
Witnesses J. M. MASON, g LEOPOLD EVERT.
