Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed April 30, 1914. Serial No. 835,479.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DAvms, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at VVhittington, near Stourbridge, in the England, have 1nven'ted. a new and useful Improvement in Direction-Posts; and I- do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheets of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, WhlCh w ll enable those skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same This invention relates to directlon posts and arms of the kind erected on highways and the like toindicate localities, mileages and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a post and arms which can be easily and conveniently adjusted to suit local requirements.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts described in the accompanying specification, illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective cordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of some of the parts of the sign post shown in Fig. 1, the lowermost being shown in section. Fig. 2 showsthe same parts as Fig. 2 but assembled. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the arm-carrying bosses. Fig. 4 is an elevation at right-angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevation of a modified form of arm-carrying boss. Fig. 7 is a plan of the lower of the fragments shown in Fig. 6.
In the embodiment of this invention shown in Figs. 1-5, the post proper 1 is preferably constructed as a casting with the lower part 2 formed as an anchoring base which is embedded in the earth, the upper part of the post having an axial hole 3 and a transverse perforation 4: through which a bolt 5 passes.
Within the axial hole 3 is located a cylindrical tube 6 which projects some distance above the top of the post 1 and is perforated with a number of transverse perforations 7 spaced apart at certain distances for the purpose to be explained hereinafter. The upper end of the tube 6 has a single transverse hole 8 suitable for a pin 9, the bolt 10 view of a sign post in ac-' being inserted in the tube 6 and the pin 9 being then passed into the hole 8 and into the eye 11 of the eyebolt 10.
gxArranged on the cylindrical tube6 are the superposed centers 12 of the indicating arms 13, each of thesaid arm-carrying centers 12 having a plate-like part 14. tangential to the periphery of the center 12 and of channel cross-section to accommodate a wood or other arm 13 on which the name of the town or village is put.
Suitable bolts-16 or the like pass through the wood arm 13 and the tangential part 14. to secure the same together. The depth of'each center 12 is greater than the depth of the channel-section part 14 to facilitate reading of the sign when in position on the post. The portion 15 of the center 12 which projects below the channel-section part 14 may be less than the corresponding part 16 which projects above the same, so that a different spacing of the direction arms 13 may be efiected by turning the centers 12 the opposite way up. The top face and the bottom face of each center 12 are formed with radial tooth-like serrations 17 so that when two centers 12 are pressedvtogether in an axial direction, the teeth and depressions mutually engage and lock rigidly together. The upper face 18 of the post proper is provided with similar facial teeth-like serrations as is the lower face 19 of a terminal cap 20 which is slid on to the central tube 6 above the uppermost of the arms 13. The outer end of the bolt 10 receives'a nut 21, Fig. 1, by which the locking cap 20, arms 13 and post 1 may be firmly clamped together.
Any number of arms within the limits of the apparatus can be fixed in position without any alteration to the structure other than adjusting the height of the central tube 6 above the top of the post casting 1. This adjustment can be readily eifected by placing the tube 6 in the post 1 to the required height and then passing the bolt 5 through one of the series of holes 7 before-mentioned and through the transverse hole 4 in the post proper 1. The arm-carrying centers 12 are slid on to the central tube 6, the terminal locking cap 20 placed in position in a similar manner and the top nut 21 screwed up, the facial teeth on the centers 12, post 1 and cap 20 insuring a substantial and rigid connection of the arms 13 to the post 1.
In a modification of the means for locking together the arm-carrying centers I2, shown in Fig. 6, the serrations are dispensed with and the engaging surfaces made 'fiat except at one part at which a semi-cylin-,
drical projection 22 is formed. The recess into which this projection 22 fits is made by filing so that the relative angular position of the centers 12 can be fixed to. suit any particular locality. V Y
: What I claim as my invention -i-s;:-
A direction post comprising in combination a hollow standard, an upper wperforated tubular extension adapted to slide 'in' the standard, means for maintaining said extension at predetermined extended positions,
a plurality of superposed arm carrying centers slidably mounted on said extension, --the lower .faceof the lowermost center adustably interlocking with the 'upper face of the standard, and the lower face of :each' of the othercenters adju'stably inter-locking Copies of this/patent may be obtained for with the upper face of the center next below it, a cross-pin in the upper end of said tubular extension, an eye bolt carried by said cross-pin and having a screw threaded 25 portion extending above the upper end of said tubular extension, a cap slidably mounted on said extension, with its lower face in- :terlocking'with the upper face of the upperlnost center, a nut on the screw threaded 30 end'of said eye :holt, a-ndbearing upon the upper :face' of said cap, to :maintain said centers in vplace,-ancl indicating arm's :carried by said centers and tangential thereto.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my rnarne to this specification inkthe presence fi-ve cents :each, by'addressing the Commissioner :ofiBatents,
Washington, 1). 0.
