T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CASPER FLrrcrI, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at WVarner, in the Province of Alberta, Dominion. of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reel-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in reel carriers, and more especially to reel carriers adapted to hold rolls of wire and the object of my invention is to provide a reel carrier which may be readily adjusted for rolls of various size.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple means for mounting the reel in operative position.
With these and other objects in view, my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my device, and then specifically pointed out in the claim which is attached to and forms a part of this application.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved reel carrier. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the adjustable cross piece thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the reel carrier in use.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, 1 designates one of the cross pieces which forms the base of the carrier and which is provided adjacent its central portion with a pair of parallel spaced apart slots 2, through which are passed the lower end of bars 3, said bars being secured in position by means of keys or other preferred fasteners 4. Intermediate between the slots 2 the member 1 is provided with a circular aperture 5 the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully explained. The upper ends of each of the bars 3 are each provided with two parallel series of spaced apart bores 6, the bores of one of said bars being in alinement with the corresponding bores of the other bar.
The above described portion of my device may be constructed of any preferred Copies of this patent may be obtained for material, but because of its strength and durability I prefer to construct the entire carrier of metal. A second cross piece 7 is provided with a central circular aperture 8, and loops 9 are provided upon either side thereof, preferably by slitting the plate and bending out the portions included between said slits as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. As shown I have provided two pairs of parallel loops the distance between these pairs being equal to the distance between the parallel bores of the bars. By this means the cross piece 7 is adjustably secured between the upper portions of the bars 3, by means of bolts 10 passed through the perforated bars and loops as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, said bolts being secured in place by means of nuts 11.
In use the cross piece 7 is removed, the reel or roll of wire is passed over the bars 3 and the cross piece 7 is again secured in place. said cross piece being positioned adjacent the top of the roll. In order to mount the reel for rotation, a crow bar, or metal rod may be passed through the apertures 8 and 5 and its lower end forced into the ground to maintain the reel in vertical position, or if desired, the ends of the rod may be journaled in a suitable frame to support the reel carrier in a horizontal position.
It will be seen from the above description that I have provided a reel carrier formed entirely of metal, and simply adjusted to various sizes of rolls.
What I claim is In a device of the character described, a cross piece, a pair of parallel spaced apart bars mounted in said cross piece, said bars being provided adjacent their upper ends each with a parallel series of spaced apart bores, the bores of one bar corresponding with the bores of the other, a second cross piece slidable between said bars and provided with pairs of spaced apart loops, and bolts adapted to co-act with said bores and loops to adjustably secure said second cross piece in place.
