UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIcEc JOHN EL WARREN, 0E wEsTBnooK, MAINE.

IMPROVEMENT |N FARM-FENcEs.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,776, dated September 8, 1874; application filed May 27, 1,874. l

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN E. WARREN, of Westbrook, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Board Fences; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a' part of this specification.

The object of my invention is an improved method of securin g the board rails of a board fence to an iron rod or post fastened to a suitable base.

My invention consists of wooden bisected posts,-the ends of which are held at asuitable distance from each other for securing between them the ends of wooden longitudinal rails by means of cast-iron clamps, through which the rod passes, said rod being first firmly xed to a suitable base of stone, wood, or iron, and passing through said iron clamps-and between the bisected parts of the wooden posts, said rod having a nut and screw upon its upper end, by means of which the clamps are held to duty and the whole structure flrmlysecured to the base.

In the drawing, Figure l is a front view. Fig. 2 is a cross-section.

My post is constructed as follows:V A rod, R, is secured to a suitable base B, having a nut, N, and screw upon its upper end. A bot torn clamp or stand, S, encircles the rod, of suitable shape to receive the lower ends of the Wooden bisected posts E E, one being held in front and the other in rear of the rod, and at any desired distance from each other, between which the wooden longitudinal rails are secured, either the rod passing through the rails or the ends of the rails abutting against the rod. The upper clamp or cap C, through which the rod passes, and of a suitable form for seJ curing the upper ends of the bisected posts in the same manner and for the'same purpose as the bottom clamp or stand S, likewise serve as a Washer for the nut N, which, being screwed down, holds all the parts in their proper relative positions, and firmly secures the whole.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, in a fence, of wooden longitudinal rails held between wooden bisected posts, said posts clamped at the top and bottom, a vertical rod passing between theV posts and secured to a suitable base, and having a nut and screw upon the upper end, by means of Which lall the parts are held in their proper position and secured to the b ase, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

JOHN E. WARREN.
