DISPLAY-BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Application filed April 6, 1911. Serial No. 619,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND S. FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuba, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in display stands designed primarily for the holding and dis play of rolls of oilcloth or like material, and it has for its object among others to provide a simple and improved eflicient display rack or stand designed for holding a plurality of rolls of oilcloth'; linoleum or other material, with means adapted to facilitate the unrolling or rolling up of the material and also having provision for compensation for rolls of varying diameters or for the varying diameter of any roll as the material is removed therefrom.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is capable of embodiment in a variety of forms, some only of which are herein illustrated.
The invention as embodied in such forms is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved display rack or stand showing two rolls of material thereon. Fig. 2 is a per spective detail showing on an enlarged scale one of the forms of adjustable support for the roller. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section as on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a perspective view, with a portion broken away, of one of the adjustable slides and its affixing screw.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the different views.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. l illustrates the device complete as set up for use, in which 1, 1 are the base members from. which rise the vertical standards or posts 2, being four in number. The base may be of any desired form of construction and the standards or posts 2 may be of any desired height and adapted to support any required number of rolls. In the present instance,
T have chosen to show the stand as proone near each end of each bar 3. Each slide comprises a vertical portion, a horizontal portion 6 extendlng over the top of the bar and a downwardly inclinded portion or flange 7, as seen best in Fig. 3 where the slide embraces two sides of the bar and displacement transversely of the length of the bar is prevented. The vertical portion of each slide has an opening 8 for the reception of a pintle 9 of a roller 10 and said vertical portion is further provided with an opening 11 for the passage of a bolt 12, the head 13 of which bears against the outer face of the slide, while upon the inner end and bearing against the inner face of the bar 3 is a nut 14, as shown in Fig. 3, the said bolt passing through the slot 4 of the bar 3. It will thus be seen that the roller 10 is adjustably mounted, its shaft or pint-1e being supported in the opening 8 of said slide and the bolt 12 passing through the vertical portion of the slide, and through the slot 4 in the bar 3 and held by the nut 14, whereby loosening of the nut permits of ready adjustment of the slide and when the latter has been adjusted to the desired position, tightening of the nut serves to firmly hold it thus adjusted.
Mounted for coiiperation with each roller 10 is a roller 15, as seen in Fig. 1, said roller being suitable mounted in the ends of the bars 3 and the shaft or pint-1e of this roller 15 is extended at one end and provided with a handle 16 whereby the same may be turned in either direction as occasion may require.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings. A roll 17 of oilcloth, linoleum or other material is placed upon the stand, the roller 10 being adjusted to or from the roller 15, according to the diameter of the roll 17, so that the said roll 17 of material will bear upon the rollers 10 and 15. When thus mounted, turning of the handle 16 will serve to unroll the oilcloth or other material from the roll 17, and a revolution of the roller 15 in the opposite direction will serve to roll up such material when desired. If a larger or smaller roll 17 is to be exhibited, the roller 10 is adjusted to or from the roller 15 according to the diameter of the roll 17. It
will also be evident that as the material is sold or removed from the roll 17, and, consequently, the diameter thereof decreases, the roll 10 can be adjusted toward the roll 15 the requisite distance so as to properly support the roll 17 What is claimed as new is 1. In a display rack the combination with a base of a series of standards rising therefrom, a series of horizontal bars supported in pairs on said standards, all of said bars having longitudinally disposed slots adjacent to the ends thereof, slides mounted on the horizontal bars at the end portions thereof, each of said slides comprising a vertical portion disposed over one side of said slot and having an opening for the reception of the pintle of a roller and an additional opening for the passage of a bolt, a horizontal portion embracing the top portion of the bar, and a downwardly extending flange embracing the opposite side of the bar from that having the opening, a roller having a pintle mounted in one of said openings, a securing bolt passing through the other opening and through the slot, and a nut upon the opposite end of said bolt for clamping the parts in adjusted position.
2. In a display rack the combination with a frame, including a pair of parallel bars having longitudinal slots adjacent to the ends thereof, angular slides mounted at the slotted end portions of the bars, each slidehaving a depending flange, said slides each also having a plurality of openings therein, a roller having a pintle at each end adapted to extend into the alining opening of the adjacent slide, and means extending through a second opening of each slide for holding said slide in adjusted position on the bar.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
