THOMAS F. MANLEY, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
Application filed February 21, 1908. Serial No. 417,128.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in box lid holders, and the object is primarily to provide a holder in which the lid is capable of being closed with the lid holder thereon, after which the holder itself may be closed down smoothly over the top of the lid thus permitting several boxes with the lid holders attached to be packed one on top of the other as in the case of large shipments.
A further object is to provide a lid holder which will mutilate and destroy the internal revenue stamp with the opening of the lid by cuttin the stamp as the holder is raised with the 11d at one end of the box.
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accom anying drawings Figure l is a lan view 0 one end of the box showingthe 11d closed; Fig. 2 is an end view showing the lid raised; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in detail of one end of the box looking from the inside toward the holder and showing the means of supporting it in its elevated osition; Fig. l is a detached view of the id holder and Fig. 5 shows the lid holder located on the outside of the box.
The holder consists in a thin piece of sheet metal, in the main perfectly flat, having an orifice l at the lower end whereby it is pivoted by a pin or other means 2 to the en of the box, and bent laterally at the upper end as at 3 to form a stop against which the lid rests when the lid is raised, and this stop rests flat against the top of the lid when it is closed so that no obstruction is formed for other boxes or object placed on top of the box.
A shoulder 4 is formed in the rear edge of the lid holder in position to engage and rest upon the upper rear edge of the box B when the lid is raised as shown in Fig. 3. In this manner the weight of the lid is supported at a slight inclination resting upon the stop 3 and the shoulder 4 of the holder resting upon the edge of the holder in its pivotal support.
A slit or slot 6 is cut in the forward edge of the lid holder to receive the tag denoting the price of the goods, thus exhibiting it in a conspicuous and convenient position.
The location of the holder is preferably just inside the end of the box in position to embrace the end of the lid and by being thus located it is not only out of the way and in a convenient position to afford support for the lid, but also it possesses the added function of cutting the revenue stamp in twain when pasted over it as it would be as the lid is first raised.
\Vhile the foregoing is the preferred c011- struction and location, it is obvious that the lid holder might be located in the outer surface of the end, as shown in Fig. 5, and perform all the functions except the last named; also it is evident that other slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a box lid holder, comprising a fiat plate having means at one end for pivotally connecting it to a box to which it is to be attached, and provided with a shoulder on one edge formed in the same plane with the rest of the plate, and provided at its free end with a stop which extends inwardly in the path of the lid or cover, whereby to support the latter in its raised position, and having the secondary function of limiting the inward position of the holder when the box lid or cover is closed and the holder is in its folded position.
2. The combination with a box and box lid, of a lid holder provided at its free end with a stop to embrace the lid and afiord a rest therefor when the lid is raised and constructed and adapted to be supported upon a portion of the box at an intermediate point when the lid is in its elevated position, the lid holder provided with a slit in its forward edge to receive a tag denoting the price of the goods.
3. As an article of manufacture, a box lid holder, comprising a fiat plate having means at one end for pivotally connecting it to a box to which it is to be attached, and provided with a shoulder on one edge formed tion, the forward edge of the holder having 10 in the same plane with the rest of the plate, a slit or kerf adapted to receive a tag or and provided at its free end with a stop card therein.
