] Specification ofii'lette rsj-Patent. 1 t 1j s tii, 1 14 Application filed January 15,1914. Serial No. 812,235.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, LOUIS R. HAGEN, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county ofHennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Seal Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,uand exact description of the invention, suchvaswill enable others skilled .in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same. My invention has for its ob ectto provide a box seal cutter,'especially adapted for use in cutting the seals of snuff boxes. I
As is well known, a large number of boxes have their covers secured lnposltlon by a seal of paper pastedover the joint be tween the box and the telescoped flange of its cover, and secured partly to saidjbox and partly to the flange of said cover.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, whichillustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views. s i r i Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is ,assplan view of the improved boXseal out ter, some parts being broken away, and
some of the exposed parts beingshown in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line m of Fig. 1, and showing a box mounted in a posltion to have 1ts seal out;
1 parts being broken away, and also showing a portion of the seal cutting knife.
The numeral 1 indicates a socket 2 for receiv ng the top P01111011 of a box. The bottom of this socket 2 is open and is formed by an annular flange 3 integral with the base 1. As shown, the base 1 is preferably made from cast metal and is quite heavy, so as to prevent the same from being easily moved when on a counter or show-case. J a s V Working through an opening 4 1n the slde base having a wallof thebase 1 and into the socket 2 is a horizontally extended knife] 5, integrally formed at'the intermediate inner edge of a horizontally extended lever 6. This lever 6 is intermediately pivoted at 7 between a pair of vertically spaced bearing lugs 8, cast integral with the base 1.. One of these lugs 1s" located above and the other'below the opening 4:,thr0ugh which the knife 5 works.
The short end of the lever 6 is bent laterally toward thebase 1, to afford a stop 9, which normally engages the base 1. A sear springlO normally holds-thelever 6 in a position with its knife :5, which is on its long. end, retracted. This spring 10 is mounted ontthepivotpinfi of the lever 6,
and one end thereof "reacts against the base 1, and the other end thereof is anchored to the long end of the lever 6. A finger-piece 11 is cast integral with the base 1. y
In Fig. 2 is shown an inverted box Z having a cover Z mounted inthe socket 2 in .a'i osition to have its seal Z cut by the knife 5. To cut theseal Z-, the finger piece 11 is engaged by. the thumb, and inward pressure is applied to the long end of the lever (ibytheindex fingen This inward pressure-on the lever 6 will carrythe knife 5 intov the socket 2 1 and "force the same through the'sejal Z3. By holding the knife in this position and rotating the box Z in the socket "2, the seal Z may be completely severed I where the flange'ofthebox cover joins the box as best shown inFig. 3. I
The "above described device, while ex tremely simple, and of small cost, is thought to beghighlyefficient for the'purposehad in view. w a I lVhat I claim is 1'. The combination with abasehaving a box-receiving socket with an opening in its wall, of a lever intermedlately pivoted to the outer wall of said base, one end of said lever normally engaging said base and acting as a stop, a-knife on the other end of said lever working through said opening into said socket, and a sprlng operative on said lever, to normally hold said knife retracted.
2. The combination with a base having a said lever, to normally hold said knife re- 10 box-receiving socket with an opening in its tracted; I I wall, of a lever intermediately pivoted to In testimony whereof I aflix' my signature and between a pair of bearing lugs on the in presence of two Witnesses. outer Wall of,,-said base, one end of said lever normally engaging said base aot- I I HAGEN' ing asa stop; a knife on the other end of Witnesses:
