Description

P. HENRIGH; GOLLAPSIBLB BOX. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 5.
WTNESSES:
PETER HENRICH, OF HOQUIAM, WSHINGTON.
, COLLAPSIBLE BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application filed November 14, 1905. Serial No. 287,370.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER HENRICH, citizen of the United States, residing at Hoquiam, in the county ofChehalis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view of the box-bottom. Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, are the blanks from which the wall and bottom sections of the box are `constructed. Y
This invention relates to that class of boxes for which Letters-Patent, No. 7 99,335, was issued to me September 1 2, 1905; and the object of the present improvements is the perfecting of such a box.
To this end the invention consists in the novel constructionandcombination of parts asrhereinafter described v,and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In accordance with 4this invention, the front and rear walls 2 and, respectively, and the ends 4 of a box are formed of a blank or single pieceY of material, as shown in Fig. 3, by giving to the same rectangular bends at thevertical lines designated by .fr and, that this operation may be most conveniently done, the blank is scored at such places. As in the patent previously alludedV to, the wall 3 is formed by interfitting and overlapping the end flaps 3f, 3 of the blank,
but in this instance an aperture 5 is provided in one of the flaps which is adapted to receive and lock a tongue Gf formed in vthe opposite one. The said aperture is formed at its inner extremity with one or two notches 5 to increase the depth thereat sufficient to admit of the insertion of the tongue and the latter is made with corresponding indent or indents 6 of a depth so that the intervening portion, or neck 6 will enter the outer end of said aperture. Two parallel and horizontally disposed slots 7 and 7 are respectively provided adjacent of the top and lower edges of the box sides, and the lower of therslots are positioned at the height at which the box bottom is to be placed. The bottom S of the box is also of a blank, or single piece, which is stamped or otherwise formed with Vtapering ends 8 and is bent, at scored lines y, to provide two folds, or flaps,'8 which are inserted upwardly `through the respective slots lbe the case.
7 and thence inwardly through the slots 7. To facilitate'such assembling, incisions 9 and 9 may advantageously be made at the extremities of the said slots to allow of the structure when being put together accommodating itself to the operation and afterwards lying more compaetly than would otherwise The bends y in the bottom section are so spaced as to be at a slightly greater distance apart than the length of the Vbox and, in consequence, these corners will protrude from the box and prevent the acci dental displacement of the bottom.
The principal advantages of the present invention reside in the fact that the box can be inexpensively and rigidly constructed and v positively locked together.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is-
A collapsible box formed from a blank scored transversely at equal distances and folded on the scored lines to form the front and rearwalls and opposite ends of the box, a projecting extremity of the blank overlapping on said rear wall of the box when theblank is folded, a T-shaped tongue carried by said overlapping extremity of the blank, the overlapped rear-wall of the box having an opening therein to receive said tongue and having notches communicating with the opening to admit the head of the tongue, the neck of said tongue seating in said opening and the shoulders of the head interlocking with the overlapped rear-wall, the end walls of the box havmg upper and lower slots, said lower slots extending throughout the length of the end walls, and the upper slots terminating short of the ends of the end walls, the end walls further provided with slots extending from the ends of the upper andlower slots laterally into the end walls to form iiaps along the slots, and a bottom formed of a separate blank having tapered ends, the said latter blank being inserted in the lower of said slots, and its tapered ends bent upwardly and projecting through the upper slots and terminating at opposite points within the box and adjacent the top thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. j
