Be it known that I, ADoLrH R. ViENs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do herebv declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact descripn tion thereof.

My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in claims herewith; its object being to improve brushes of the kind especially designed for cleaning bowls, jars and the like.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partly sectional side elevation of a brush embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a plan view of same, and Fig. 3, atransverse section view of said brush on the plane indicated by line 3-3 in Fig. l.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a fiat brush-handle of suitable length, breadth and thickness, provided with preferably inclined side notches as well as with the usual preferably V-shaped endnotch. Driven in the brush-handle, adja cent to its inclined side notches, is a staple c ordinarily employed to secure a center tuft C of bristles or analogous brush-material to said handle, and this same staple is also employed, by me, to secure the forward ends of twisted wire cores of a pair of brush-sections B to said handle. The coresof the brush-sections B being thus secured at their forward ends to the brush-handle, they are drawn tight in the side vnotches of said handle, after which said brush-sections are bent over the adjacent end of the aforesaid handle to have their cores draw snug in its Vnshaped notch. The rear ends of the cores of the brush-sections B are now extended through apertures provided in the handle and clenched on said handle.

By having the brush-handle provided with side notches in which to engage the cores of the brush-sections B, fastened at their forward ends to said handle, by the staple c or otherwise, said brush-sections are not liable to be laterally disengaged from the end y notch of the aforesaid handle, as is a common fault with brushes of the species herein set forth, as ordinarily constructed. The utilization of the staple o to secure the forward ends of the cores of the brush-sections B, as well as the tuft C, is convenient as well as economical, over the old way of fastening said ends of said brush-section cores, by extending the same through apertures in the brush-handle and clenching on said handle, similar to the mode of fastening the rear ends of the aforesaid brushsection cores as herein shown and described.

In addition to the advantages aforesaid I am enabled to obtain a greater range of brush-head that results from lthe bending of the brush-sections B on an end of the handle, because of the short bends and grip obtainable on the cores ofsaid brush-sections each caught in a side notch and end notch of said handle.

I claim:

1. A brush having a handle provided with side notches adjacent to a forward end notch therein, brush-sections in snug engagement with the notches, and means independent of twisted-wire cores of the brush-sections by which the forward ends of same are secured to the handle, the rear ends of said cores being also secured to said handle.

2. A brush having a handle provided with side notches adjacent to a forward end notch therein, brush-sections in snug engagement with the notches, and a staple by which the forward ends of twisted-wire cores of the brush-sections are secured to the handle, the rear ends of said cores being also secured to said handle.

3. A brush having a handle provided with side notches adjacent to a forward end notch therein, brush-sections in snug engagement with notches, a center tuft, and a staple by which this tuft and the forward ends of twisted wire cores of the brush-sections are secured to the handle, the rear ends of said cores being also secured to said handle.

4.
