BROOM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,976, dated August 28, 1900. Application filed April 28, 1900. Serial No. 14,719. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, HoMnE WERLE Honon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved and economical broom for use in cotton and woolen mills, factories, and around machinery generally; and to the end named I construct the broom with metallic shields arranged in a manner to strengthen the broom and protect it from damaging contact with machine-frames- The invention resides in the novel features hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin ga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, in longitudinal section, given to show the tiebar employed in connection with certain of the shields; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the faceshields- I'provide the broom with face-shields A, one on each face adjacent to the handle, and shields B, one adjacent to each shoulder.

The face-shields A have at the neck or upper end two ears a, divided by an opening a, and the ears curve outwardly to give them an overhang, which gives an eiiicient hold to the binding-wire C, which is wound around the shields and broom-head D, binding them to the stick D. The shields bulge outwardly bodily, as at co2, to conform to the upper end of the broom-head and are of a width to reach the side shoulders of said head. Nails A are driven through holes CL3 in the shields and into the broom-stick.

The shoulder-shields B are U-shaped to embrace the sides of the broom-head, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, and in connection with these shields a tie E, of steel wire, is employed,which has its respective ends driven through the opposing sides of the U-shaped shields and the intervening broom-corn, as best seen in Fig. 3, the extreme ends e being suitably clenched. The tie-bar securely binds the shields in place and appreoiably strengthens the broom-head.

The face-shields A prevent damage to the broom when the faces contact with the machine-frames in the ordinary or usual movements of sweeping,while the shoulder-shields serve a like purpose in sweepin g beneath machinery by an edgewise movement of the broom, and it will be evident that a brooln provided with this improved armor will be very durable and efficient for use in spinning and weaving mills and around machinery generally.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A broom having face-shields secured to the opposite faces at the upper end of the broom-head, said shields having separated ears at the upper end, said ears being curved outwardly, and bound to the head by a binder extending around the ears and the upper end of the head.

2. A broom having shoulder-shields at the side edges of the broom-head and a tie uniting the shields, the tie having ends passing through the broom.

3. A broom having shoulder-shields at the side edges of the broom-head, said shields being U shaped, and a tie connecting the shields and passing by its ends through both sides of each shield and through the broom-head.
