Be it known that I, HORACE T. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in brooms, and more particularly to a novel form of broom head and handle securing means therefor.

An object of the invention resides in the provision of a broom, the head of which has embodied therein an improved means for securing the straw ends, said means being so constructed and arranged as to increase the rigidity of the head and thus provide for a greater resiliency of the straw tips than is at present the case.

A further object of the invention is to provide an article of the above character which, while presenting the appearance of the usual construction of broom, will be formed in such manner as to effect a distinct saving in the materials usedand a consequent reduction in the cost of manufacture, such saving being accomplished by utilizing shorter lengths of straw than are at present employed for the purpose.

The invention further consists in novel and eiicient means for detachably securing the handle to the broom head, one element of said handle securing means also' forming a part of the rigid head structure whereby an extremely simple and durable construction will be provided.

With the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

upper end of which is threaded as at 11 and has engaged thereon a nut 12. The lower end of the stem 10 is provided with a transverse opening y 13, having engaged therethrough a length of wire 14, the ends whereof being coiled as at 15 oppositelyl from said stem.

In laying the initial layer of straws, the same are shaped in the usual manner about the coils 15 and that portion of the stem 10 i between said coils and the nut 12. Additional layers of strawt are next laid upon the initial layer until the desired size has been reached, spaced bands 16 of wire or other like material being then drawn therearound and secured, to tightly compress the straw about the stem and within the coils 15.
