H. M. JENKINS. Broom.
No. 197,858. Patented Dec. 4, um.
WITNES'SES INVENT R dif-W N.PEIE`RS, PHOTO-LJTHOGR-APMER WASHINGTONv o CA UNITED TAT ATENT FFIGEI IMPROVEMENT IN BROOIVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,858, dated December 4, 1877; application filed I November 19, 1877. l
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. JENKINS, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speeiiieation.
My invention relates to brooms; and it consists in the construction. of a metallic band, to be fastened around the broom, and the handle fastened thereto, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of the band.
A represents the ordinary broom-head, fastened in the usual manner to the handle B.
Ordinarily the broom-head is fastened at a suitable point by stitehin g with thread or wire; but in place of such stitching I employ a metallic band, C, as shown. This band is stamped, out, or otherwise made of a single piece, bent in the center to iit one edge of the broom-head, the ends of the metallic band overlapping each other, and itting the other edge of the head. In one end of the band C is formed a tongue, a, while in the other end is made a slit, at I), for the tongue a to pass through and then. be clinched, to fasten the two ends of the band together.
I do not, however, eonne myselfto this particular mode of fastening, as the two ends of the metallic band may be fastened together by any other suitable means.
The band C is formed on both sides with one or more longitudinal eorrugations, (l d,fo1 the purpose of stifi'enin g and strengthening thc band, and in bending the band the metal is sprung in such a manner that the center of each side bends inward, so as to press on the broom, and thus hold the broom tightly, even when the broom-corn shrinks, which it invariably will do, as the brooms are always made while the straw is more or less green.
The metal band C is, on each side in the center, provided or .formed with a projection or lip, D, which extends upward along the broom-head. These lips or projections D D are so formed that the full size of the handle can pass between them, and this end of the handle is fastened by screws or nails, passing through holes x in the said lips into the handle.
The handle may extend as far down as desired.
In manufacturing the band G it is made on a greater or less swell, according to the flare ofthe broom-head.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic band for brooms, made of a single piece, with Athe ends suitably united t0- gether, and provided with .loi'lgitiulinal corrugations on its sides, each side curved o1' sprung inward in the center, and formed with an upward projection or lip, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of November, 187 7.
Il. M. JENKINS.
