Description

UNITED STATES ROBERT E. COPSON, OF HAMBURG, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,986, dated August 15, 1871.
To ell whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. OoPsoN, of Hamburg, in the county of Fremont and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference. being had to the accompanying drawingl forming part of this specification, in which the ligure is a side view of a broom illustrating,` my improvement.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved broom, in which the Outer or circumference-wire shall be so arranged and secured that, should the tack that fastens said wire work out or the wire be broken, the said wire will still be held in its place, securely coniining,- the brush; and it consists in the combination oi' the extra braided wires with the outer or circumferencewire, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the brush of the broom, which is arranged and applied to the handle B in the ordinary manner. O is the outer or circumferencewire, which is wound around the butts of the brushes that surround the lower part of the handle B, and
the `end of which is secured to said handle by a tack, D, in the ordinary manner. E are the extra or braided wires, which are bent or looped around one of the lower coils of the outer wire G, the parts of said extra wires being passed alternately above and below the successive coils ofthe said outer wire C, and crossing each other between vsaid coils, as shown in the drawing. The ends of the wire E are bent back-around the last or upper coils of the wire (l, and are driven into the handle B. The braided wires E thus hold the outer wire G securely in place even should the tack D be lost out or the-said wire C be broken. Four, more or less7 of the wires E may be used, as may be desired or convenient.
Having,l thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The extra braided wires E, in combination with the outer or circumterence-wires O and with the handle B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT E. COPSON.
