Description

H. SMITH.
Flue Stopper.
No. 90,401. I Patented May 25, 1869.

HENRY SMITH, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 90,401, dated May, 25, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SMITH, of Southington, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Flue-Stopper and Ventilator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will I enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the sockets and springs.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention consists in securing the springs of a flue-stopper to the body of the same, by providing it with suitable sockets, to receive the ends of the springs, and hold the same when in use, and from which sockets the springs can be withdrawn for transportation.
'0' c c designate springs, which, when in place, bear against the inside of the chimney-flue, and hold the stopper in its place in the usual manner.
d designates a socket, secured to the back of the stopper, in any proper manner The inside of the socket d is of the size and shape of the end of the springs 0 c c.
The stopper, with its register a, and the sockets d secured to it, is ready for transportation, and the springs c c 0 can be formed and packed with the same, and so remain until it is desired to use the stopper, when the springs c c a can be inserted in the sockets d.
Ordinarily, flue-stoppers are not kept on hand for sale, but are made to order as wanted, or if a few are sometimes made beforehand, they are sold to the consumer at the same shop where they are made. If each tinner or stove-dealer should attempt to make a register in the few flue-stoppers sold by him, making them in such limited quantities would make the cost so high as to prevent their ready sale.
By making the springs removable, as in my invention, so that the stoppers can be transported for sale, a large quantity can be made-at one time, and suitahle machinery provided for making the same, so that they can be furnished with a register for nearly, if not quite as low a price as the ordinary stoppers made by hand.
Registers have been used in stove-pipe thimbles to ventilate rooms, which thimble was secured firmly to the chimney, and the register used either when the pipe was in the chimney or not, but my stopper is only to place in the pipehole when the pipe is withdrawn, and cannot be used simultaneously with the pipe.
The register a will be found very convenient for ventilation in summer.
I do not claim holding a stopper in its place by springs, as it is the common manner of holding the same; but the springs of common ones are soldered or riveted to the stopper, and therefore so bulky as to forbid transporting the stopper to sell.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the socket (1, spring 0, and register a, the whole combined and arranged with a fluestopper, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
Witnesses: HENRY SMITH.
H. It. BRADLEY, JULIUS BUTTON.
