IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE ELBOWS.

TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CARL RECHT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Elbow for Stove-Pipes, and other pipes and tubes; .and I do hereby declare the following to be a filli, clear, andexact description thereof, enabling those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of this invention.

This invention relates to an elbow-joint, the two parts or shanks of which are united in such a manner that the elbow can be adjusted to any desired angle.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a separate ring, which overlaps the flanges, formed at the ends of both shanks of the elbow, where said shanks join each other, in such a manner that the operation of making the elbow is materially facilitated, and a strong and durable adjustable elbow is obtained.

Each of these parts is provided with a circular flange, 6 or e; at that end wherejt joinsthe other part, and the two parts are held together by a ring, d, which is made of sheet metal, and laps over both flanges b c, as clearly shown in fig. 1 of' the drawing. By this ring the two parts are firmly united, and, at the same time, thepart C can be turned and brought to the position shown in fig. 1, or to that shown in fig, 2, or to any position intervening between the two.
I am aware that Letters Patent have been granted to A. K. Tupper,.July 19, 1859, (24,834,) in which an adjustable elbow-joint is described which has some resemblance to my invention. He provides one of the parts of the elbow with a plain flange, made to overlap the first flange, andserving to hold the two parts of the elbow together.- This double flange, however, is exceedingly diflicult to make. The metal has to be stretched at certain points to such an extent that it is liable to crack, and the elbow becomes weak and liable to get out of order in a short time.
By using a detached ring, as shown in my drawing, the flanges b 0 can be easily made, and tlio ring itself cnnbe provided at a trifling cost, and without impairing the strength of the metal, so that a strong and durable elbow is obtained.
Although I have only here illustrated my invention by means of a stove-pipe elbow-joint, yet ibis likewise applicable to all'kinds of pipes and tubes, as, for example, to leaders and conductors of water-pipes, whose. elbow-joints, by means of my invention, can be turned and adjusted to any desired angle. I
Among the advantages of my invention is thefollowing: That I 'am enabled to make the parts which com-. pose an elbow for stove, or other pipe or tube, the same metal as the rest of the pipe or tube, without regard to' its character for hardness or stifl'ness, since it is only necessary to produce thereon the flanges or turned-up edges, which are enclosed by'the ring d. The said ring can be made of any kind of metal, butI prefer to use tough sheet metal for thepurpose.
My invention is also applicablc to-elbows made of cast metal, where flanges b. c are cast thereon in making.
