IMPROVENlENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHEET-METAL ELBQWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent PTO-137,525, dated April 8, 1873; application filtd August 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE BANOROFT, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Sheet-Metal Elbows for Stove and other Pipes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is an elevation of an elbow, made in accordance with my improved plan, showin g the end sections as cylindrical in form, but slightly beveled upon their inner ends, the beveled sections for giving the proper curvature to the pipe, the rivets which hold the ends of the sections in position, and the heads which hold the sections in connection with each other 5 and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, showing the method of constructing the sections and of securing them to each other, and of uniting their ends.
This invention relates to curved elbows for a section of stove and other pipes; and it consists in the manner of uniting a series of sections or parts in such a way as to form an elbow or curved section of a pipe, substantially such as is shown in the drawing.
In constructing elbows of this character I use two cylindrical rings, A A, for the ends thereof, the inner ends of which may be slightly beveled to prepare them for the reception of the intermediate beveled parts B B, which are to be of such a diameter that they will pass over or into the end sections or parts A A, and they are to be so beveled that when the required number of them have been inter posed between the end pieces the axis of one of said pieces shall be in a nearly vertical position, while that of the other is in a horizontal or a nearly horizontal position.
This method of cutting the intermediate parts of the elbow will be employed when it is desirable to make of it afull quarter turn 5 but when it is desirable to curve the section of the pipe so as to give it more or less than onefourth of a circle, then the amount of bevel to be given to theparts will be varied accordingly.
1n order that the ends of the difi'erent parts composing my elbow may beheld together they are lapped over each other and held by rivets, which pass through both of the ends of the ring, or they may be united in any other suitable manner; and in order that the different parts may be firmly united to each other and thus held in their proper positions, I cause the ends of each part to enter into or pass over the one to which it is to be joined for a distance sufificientto admit of there beingformed a bead, such as is shown in Fig. 2, said head extending for three-fourths of the distance, more or less, around the elbow or section of the pipe, as shown in Fig. 1.
This method of uniting the parts of the elbow differs from any other with which I am acquainted, and possesses advantages over them,in that the parts, when formed, are riveted or otherwise secured together at their joints and then inserted into each other at their ends, after which the bevel is formed upon that portion which is the most accessible, leaving the other part smooth and free from resting-places for dirt and dust, while it leaves the elbow sufficiently strong for all practical purposes, and allows it to be made at a much less cost.
Another and a very important advantage due to this form of construction is that the parts cannot turn upon each other, and thus cause a displacement of the other portions of the pipe with which this curved portion may be connected, as is the case with those in which the bead extends all the way around the joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to procure by Letters Patent, is-
An elbow or curved section of pipe, the beveled portions of which are joined together by means ot'beads, which extend only partially around the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth;
