PIPE-JOINT.
Patented June 12-,1877.
J ly. 2.
NJETERS. PNOTO-UTHOGRAPHE-R, WASNINBYDN D c UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
. GEORGE MATHESON, OF MOKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-JOINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,770, dated J une 12, 1877; application filed March 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE MATHESON, of McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Joints; and I dollereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of joints for pipes of that class known in commerce as wrought-iron pipes and consists in making one end of each section of pipe bell-mouthed for the reception of the opposite end of the next section of pipe, and interposing between the outer wall of the entering pipe and the inner wall of the bell-mouthed end a gasket of lead, and then forcing a sleeve of wroughtiron over the bell-mouthed end, and subsequently calking the lead gasket between said walls of the two sections of pipe.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is a side .view of twotsections of pipe joined together by means of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal andvertical section of the same.
Iii the drawings, A B represent two sections of pipe. One end of each section of pipe is made bell-mouthed, as indicated at 0. Between the inner wall of the bell-mouthed section A and the outer wall of the entering pipe B is interposed a lead gasket, D. Over the bell-mouthed end of the pipe A is placed a sleeve, 0, which is forced on the bell-mouthed end until the edge of the sleeve is even with the edge or end of the bell-mouth. The lead gasket is then firmly calked between the aforesaid. walls of the two sections of pipe, the sleeve 0 serving as a brace for preventing the spreading or enlarging of the bell-mouth by the calking process.
A joint formed as herein described will be strong, stifi', durable, and will be perfectly steam or water tight, and can bemade with great facility, and the pipe can be detached with case when it is necessary to separate them.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- A joint formed between two sections of pipe by making one end of each section bellmouthed and interposing a lead gasket between the inner wall of the bell-mouth and the outer wall of the entering pipe, and subsequently placing a sleeve over the bell-mouth andcalking the lead gasket, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of December, 1876. GEO. MATHESON. Witnesses:
A. C. J onNsToN, JAMES J. JOHNSTON.
