Description

T. HUNT. PIPE COUPLING.
THEODORE HUNT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PIPE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,264, dated April 22, 1884:.
Application filed November 6, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE HUN'r,a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, haveinvented a new and useful PipeCoupling, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to pipe-couplings; and it has for its object to produce a joint or coupling especially intended and adapted for drain and sewer pipes, which shall be simple in construction, easily applied, and which may be readily opened or detached, so as to admit of inspection of the joints or repairs of the same when necessary.
To this end the invention consists in the improved construotion and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pipecoupling, showing the parts composing the same separated. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the parts joined. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectionatview representing two sections of pipe joined by my improved coupling; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the line w 00 in Fig. 3.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates my improved pipe-coupling, which consists of a ring or band comprising two halves or sections, B O. The said sections are constructed, preferably, of sheet metal of a somewhat elastic nature, in order that they may be readily sprung together, as will be hereinafter described; but other material may be employed in their manufacture without departing from the nature of my invention. One of the sections, B, is provided at its ends with inturned or hookshaped rims or flanges D D, formed by bending the ends substantially as illustrated in the drawings. The other section, 0, is provided at its ends with outturned flanges E, which may be strengthened or re-enforced by doubling the metal upon itself, as shown, and which are adapted to enter and engage the hooks D of the section B. One of the sections (0 in the drawings) is also provided on its outer side, near its ends, with studs or projections F, adapted to be grasped, or serving as rests for any suitable tools in applying or removing the coupling.
In applying my improved coupling I proceed as follows: One of the sections forming the coupling-ring is first filled with the cement properly prepared, then placed under the joint formed by the adjacent ends of the sections of pipe to be connected, as shown at G. Cement is then spread upon the surface of the pipesections over the joint, and the remaining section is then sprung into place upon the first one, thus completing thejoint. It is evident that the coupling-ring must be wide enough to fully cover the joint. This coupling is easily applied, and, owingto the elastic nature of the material of which it is composed, it may at any time be readily removed for inspection or repairs of the joint by simply prizing the upper section off. \Vhen the inspection or repairs have been completed, it may in a moments time be returned to its former position.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A pipe-coupling consisting of a ring or band comprising two parts or sections formed of elastic material, one of said sections being provided at its ends with inturned hookshaped flanges, and the other section being provided at its ends with outturned flanges, re-enforced by bending the metal of the flange upon itself, said inturned and outturned flanges being adapted to engage each other when said ring or band sections are sprung together, substantially as specified.
2. A pipe-coupling comprising two half rings or bands provided at their ends wit-h suitable catches adapted to engage each other when the said sections are sprung together, one of the said sections being provided on its outer side, near its ends, with studs or projections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE HUNT.
