UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT G. SGHERER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE PIPE-ELBOW AND FASTENENG MEANS THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of naers Patent No. 704,936, dated July 1 5, 1902. Application filed August 3. 1901. strains. 70,712. (No model.)
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi! nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pipe-Elbows.
and Fastening Means Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable pipe-elbows and afastening means therefor; and the main object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is so simple in construction as to make it possible for a dealer to carry in stock the proper fittings for all sizes of elbows, as the same may be made up of sections which are securely fastened at the proper angle by means of the fastening means.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a device of this character embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclose herein. I i
In the drawings, Figurel isa side elevation of a stovepipe having one of theimproved e1- bows connecting it with another pipe., Fig.
2 is a sectional view of the elbow. .Fig. 3 is an elevation of the fastening means. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the stampings, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of the joint and fastening means.
Referring to the drawings, A and B desig nate, respectively, the vertical and horizontal sections of a pipe, having an elbow 0 connecting the two. This elbow consistsof sections of piping or bands D, whose edges are provided with the annular depressed grooves E, terminating in the substantially right-angled upturned edges or rims F. These rims or edges when the sections are together are flush, as shown in Fig. 2, and in order to securely hold said sections together a grooved split band or ring G is placed upon the meeting edges of two sections, so that the rims H of the band are sunken .or placed in the grooves of the sections, thus causing the two edges F to be flush together in about the center of the bands groove. This band is provided with the two stampings J, having two portions at right angles to each other, and are secured by their long legs K to the bands ends, so that their upwardly-extending rightangled arms L are substantially parallel and adjacent when the band is in place. These 'arms are each provided with an opening M,
and adapted to pass through these openings is the bolt N, having nut O to cause the bolt to draw the ends of the band closely together after the sections have been fixed in their proper positions.
place, said band having been slightly loosened.
It is evident from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, that I provide a pipe-elbow and means for securing the joints of the same, embodying novel features of construction, which render the device very simple, durable, and inexpensive, as well as thorough, efiicient, and practical.
What I claim as new is= 1. A stovepipe-elbow consisting of a series of substantially the same shaped sections each of which is provided with an annular upturned edge which is at right angles to the body of the section, and an annular groove provided in the body near the edge, said upturned edges of the section being adapted to lie flush together; and the split band substantially U-shaped in cross-section adapted to have its edges fit in the annular grooves of the section so that the groove portion of band will span the joint of the upturned edges and two right-angled clamps or brackets, secured to the ends of the joints and adapted to be brought together to clamp the joint at the joint of the sections.
2. A section for a stovepipe-elbow, comprising a band substantially circular in cross-section andhaving its upper and lower edges converging so as to make the band higher on one side than the opposite side, said band being provided with a depressed groove in the body of the section parallel with 1 the edges, and having upon each edge an outwardly projecting rim, said rims? edges beingfiush with the outersurface of the section, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affin my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT G. SCHERER.
