Description

SHILLITD & WALKER.
Rein Holder.
No. 90,399. f' Patented May 25, 1869.
A we.
@mme e JOHN L. SHILLITO AND WILLIAM M. WALKER, OF WELLSVLLE PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No.V 90,399, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPROVED REIN-HQLDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that we, J cHN L. SHILLITO and WIL- LLAM M. WALKER, of Wellsville, in the county of.
York, andin the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Holders',
lines, or reins of a horse when not in use; and.
It consists of a hinged clasp, secured by means of a springcatch at its free end, and provided, upon its under side, with 'a rubber pad, corresponding in size and shape with a similar pad -secured to the frame of said holder, between Vwhich the reins are clasped, when desired.
In annexed drawing- A represents the frame ofthe holder, consisting of a dat piece of metal, three-fourths of an inch thick, and two inches wide, having two vertical parallel edges, and pointed-at its lower side, as shown in iig. l. Said frame is bifurcated horizontally from edge to edge, (as shown in iig. 2,) so as to permit of its being passed over the upper edge of a dash-board, and is provided with suitable holes, xx, through which screws may be placed, for the purpose of securing the frame thereto.
Within thelupper side or edge of the frame A, is a recess, B, one-half`of an inch deep, and one and onefourth inch long, the bottom of which is recessed out so as to contain a rubber pad, C.
A clasp, D, is hinged to the upper left-hand corner of said frame, and its free end shuts down into the opposite corner of the same, where it is secured by means of a spring-catch, a, engaging with a detent, d, at`
tached to and projecting downward from said clasp, the catch being released from engagement with said detent by means of a stud, c, projecting horizontally from the former.
The lower side of the clasp D is provided with a recess, which contains a rubber pad, d, corresponding in size and shape with that in the frame, so that when said clasp is closed, there is left, between said rubber pads, a space, which is intended to be alittle less in width vertically than the thickness of the lines which are to be held, so that when said lines are placed within saidspace, and the clasp pressed down and secured, they shall be iirmly held.
In order that lines of different thickness may be accommodated, the recess containing the lower pad is made somewhat deeper than is ordinarily required, so as to receive a number of shines of thin metal, or leather, by the addition or removal of which, said pad may be raised or lowered, andthe space between the pads correspondingly changed.
This device vcan be readily attached to the dashboard of a carriage, or sleigh, and furnishes a secure and convenient means whereby the lines, or reins may be prevented from being drawn down upon the ground by the horse, it being only necessary to press against the stud c and release the clasp, which tlies open by the pressure of the rubber, and permits the insertion of the lines, which are secured by closing said clasp.
Having thus fully set forth th'e nature and merits of our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the within-described line-holder, consisting of the bifurcatcd frame A, clasp D, spring-catch a, deteut fl, and rubber pads c and d', substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 15th day of April, 1869.
JOHN L. SHILLITO. Y WM. M. WALKER. Witnesses:
T. T. GARDNER, W. H. SPANGLER.
