Letters Patent No. 108,597, dated October 25,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters'Patent and making part of the same.
I,'I )A\'Is HURD, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
future of the Invention.
The invention consists in the combination of a stiffening shelf, with the coil formed in the holdingfork, as hereinafter described.
General Description.
In the drawing Figure 1, is a perspective view, showing the deviceattached to the side of a dash-board.
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation, showing the manner of securing the clamp.
Figure 3 is also a side elevation, showing the inanner of securing the clamp on top of a dash, when desired.
A is a socket or clamp,'made in one or two pieces, with braces a a, which inclose the edge of the dash B.
On the top of the socket is a flat shelf or shoulder, I), the purpose of which is to be hereinafter described. Through the center of the socket an opening, 0, is made to receive the strap of a whip-socket, which will he placed by the side of the rein-holder.
G is the fork or holder, which is bent-in a single coil, cl, near the center, for the purpose of making the holder self-springing.
The upper or nipping part c is thereby kept pressed forward against the edge of the dash or guard D,
which may be put on to keep the dash from wearing out, and which, if desired, may be adjustable higher or lower. 7
The lower part or legs ff of the holding-fork are inserted in the clamping-socket A, which is formed on the inside to receive and retain them.
The coil cl rests on the shoulder 'b, which performs the important functions of a rest for the coil, and a permanent resistance to the backward action of the spring of the holder when thereins are forced in,
thereby securing the important advantage of allowing a free opening of the spring on the first impulse, but a quick stiffening of the same when sufiiciently open to receive the reins.
' The guard D is not absolutely essential to the invention, and the socket A can be changed in shape, so far as the clamping part is concerned, to fasten it on the upper edge of a wooden or leather dash, as shown in fig. 3.
The special features of novelty in my invention are the shelf or shoulder b and the spring coil d, forming part-of thewire-holder; therefore,
What I claim is-.
1. The shoulder 11, with its bracket, forming a rest and resistance for the back action of the coil (1 of the spriug-holder'O, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the holding-fork C, prorided with the coihl, shoulder b upon the bracket, with or without the guard 1), substantiallyas described.
Inwitness whereof, I. have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
-DAVIS HURD.
